The penetrating message by George Verwer deserves a wider audience. This little book will surely make you uncomfortable – because sooner of later you will recognize yourself in some of the characters of Pseudo-Discipleship! If you do find a rather unflattering picture of yourself in this book, then try not to cover it up, but face up honestly to the indictment, surrendering every area of your life to the One who alone can cleanse away the hidden hypocrisies, and make you His true disciple.
In this little book, George Verwer introduces us to 21 "pseudo-disciples", such as Mr. Liar, Mr. Judge-Others, Mr. Girl-Hunter, Mr. Status-Seeker. All of these pseudo-disciples are examples of those who think they are following Christ, but do so with sinful motivations, methods or attitudes. These sometimes humourous stories that are often in the context of (short-term) mission work will remind you of certain people who have become acquainted with, but will also hold up a mirror to show you what you are like in specific areas, giving you the opportunity to repent and become a true and good disciple of Christ.
An excellent run-down of the personality faults of false disciples. Very useful, and convicting. I could definitely see myself in some of them, and a good reminder to return to God and be changed.
