Nice guys finish last. Words I live by. In my world, it pays to be the bad guy...and I'm very good at being bad. I have a thriving business built on blood, sweat and tears-literally. Underground fights are my bread and butter, and no one interferes with that if they know what's good for them. Not even some expensive-looking blonde, with dark blue eyes and a mouth that doesn't know when to stop. Babysitting Lela Morgan starts out as a favour to a "friend," but the longer I'm forced to look out for her, the harder it is to keep my hands to myself. And the more I want her, the crueller my words become. But in my dangerous world I cannot afford to be seen to be going soft. For the first time in my life, I'm close to losing control. The harder I push her away, the harder she pushes my buttons. But she's tougher than she looks, and she's not going down without a fight. Could it be that enemies make the best lovers?

Dark Heart is a contemporary enemies to lovers story, that will take you on an intense journey with Aaron Jonson and Lela Morgan (aka Brat).

Aaron is a tough guy, but not completely heartless. I love that no matter how the story progresses the underlying personality of Aaron’s character is solid throughout the book.

The development of his relationships and the storyline are wonderfully captivating and perfectly written.

There’s some truly beautiful and touching moments throughout the story, which turned me into an emotional wreck. But at the same time the underlying suspense of where the story was going, had me deeply drawn in and I wanted more and more with each turn of the page.

Again Eve L Mitchell has blown me away with her writing skills and I can’t wait to read the next book she releases.

I highly recommend Dark Heart, which is a little darker and more mature than Eve L Mitchell’s Indian Summer.

Side note: Dark Heart is set in the same world as Indian Summer, and can be read as a stand-alone if needed. But if you haven’t already read Indian Summer, I definitely recommend reading it first. Not only to give you some background to this world, but because this is also a wonderfully written story and there are some character cross overs.

Dark Heart was a rollercoaster ride. It was high energy, banter filled, and feels inducing. It was hard to put it down and so hard to resist sneaking a look at that last page to see if your favorite characters get their happy ending. I absolutely could not put the book down once I got to the 70 percent mark and am still trying to verbalize my love for it. Aaron was just fantastic and Lela grew so much in such a short time. I loved their relationship and found myself fully invested in the story. I highly recommend this to anyone who has a thing for enemies to lovers and cannot wait to read Eve's next book.

I went for this book blind eyed - the author never heard off before, series never have seen around before. Was a bit sceptical and expected the worst. But we all are so aware of saying "Never judge a book by its cover", yes? God damn, it proved me wrong again.

So I started a book and was blown away with it. The story was so captivating I couldn't put this book down. Even fighting the flue I was up till the early hours of the morning reading it as I just couldn't settle and sleep.

The characters were very well developed and they stayed true to themselves all along through the book. Not even once I felt that they were twisted to suit the story plot. The writing style is very important for me in the book, I'm a sucker of long, luring sentences and I was not a bit disappointed here.

The main character Aaron ends up having to mind a young girl Lela while her mum and stepdad are on holidays. Aaron has no time for love or any similar distractions at the moment. But Lela starts crawling under his skin making him lose focus and self-control, something he can't afford at any price as he is few enemies to deal with and his business and family to protect.

The banter between Aaron and Lela is so funny and amusing, but I don't envy her for even a second and I have no idea how did she manage to stand him and fight for his love as he was such an ass to her. I have huge respect for Lela as regardless all the push from Aaron she stood by him and kept bending him towards her until he couldn't resist her any longer.

"I lost all rational thought when I was near her. She was my drug and I was scared I was becoming addicted to her."

And when the boy like Aaron feels in love he starts shitting bricks and acts like a real d!ck and this is where the fun begins.

Truly enjoyable story and I strongly recommend you to give this book a shot.

*I have received an ARC in exchange for an honest review

What a beautiful book. I just loved the slow burn romance here. And everything about it.

First off, this author has outdone herself. I loved her writing and the book has shown how she has grown as an author. The writing just makes you feel all the emotions of the characters.

The slow burn romance is excellent too. I loved how the book progressed from friends to mutual respect to love with tons of chemistry. The book focused on the relationships and emotional parts. I just fell in love with the characters.

The hero and heroine are so good. I loved their personalities. Each of them was so strong to complement each other. I just loved their journey and character arcs.

I enjoyed this book a lot and even though Aaron was the biggest jerk I have ever read I did love him. He was absolutely brutally honest about everything and anything, from the beginning he allows his brother to be beat down and ran out of town and trust me his brother deserved it and some, but Aaron didn't even blink an eye and was the one that said for his friend to do it. He is set up to have to help take care of a guy's step daughter and from the start he already holds a certain amount of animosity towards her, Lela. Lela is said to be a trouble maker of sorts and having her life spiraling out of control, this is where I found my issues with the book because yes she did take some drugs recreationally with friends while they were out partying she never seemed like a true junkie to me. Aaron and his friends kept referring to her as "a junkie" or "the junkie" even to her face and to me that was a little bit too cruel because even if she was you don't address people that way to help them and you can't say it was tough love because they could care less about Lela. Also if she was a junkie she never exhibited the characteristics of one, she never had withdrawals, she never went out looking to buy drugs, she never tried to steal to get drugs, all in all the book said she got caught once and then she got high ONE other time in the story so I was very upset they were so cruel to her when they call her a junkie and treat her like a pariah even if they were into some not so legal dealings themselves and drinking around her. Other than that I did enjoy Aaron and Lela's push and pull, and eventually they did get their stuff figured out to end up together.

Dark Heart is Eve L Mitchell’s second book, written in the same universe as Indian Summer. Aaron was a minor character there comes into his own in Dark Heart. We gets a glimpse into the life of a hard man with morals, paired with a girl who threatens to wreak everything he’s built. Sparks fly with tension that holds throughout the story right to the end. A wonderful read - I’ll be going a second round shortly!

Dark Heart was a first for me by Eve L. Mitchell. And I will say that I will be adding her other work to my TBR list.
Aaron and Lela's relationship was definitely one that started out as them being enemies. Their back and forth was one that had me shaking my head and saying, "come on already. " There was an obvious attraction but both were really stubborn.

Ho. Lee. Cow.

So I like a bad boy as much as the next hotblooded woman... but Aaron is so much more than a bad boy. He's a straight up a**. And you know what? I love it. He knows who he is and what he's about, and he's unapologetic about it.

So Refreshing!

Lela is... well... I'll be honest: I can't stand her. She's whiny, she's immature, and God help me, I just want to shake her and yell "Would you grow up?!"

The two of them together, though? They work... and it's kind of beautiful.

As a firm believer in not spoiling storylines, I will refrain from giving out too many details... what I WILL tell you, however, is that this is a fabulous second book from Eve L. Mitchell: solid writing, great world building, strong character development, and a story that grabs a hold and doesn't let go.

This is a great book to cozy up with on a lazy Saturday with a glass of wine and some chocolate. Oh, and congratulations on your new book boyfriend ;-)

Ok, I absolutely love the cover of this book, I fell head over heels for the characters and the storyline is dark, gritty but also full of so much love. Eve did a fantastic job with the writing, the humor of the banter and snippy attitudes between Aaron and Lela are just perfect. I also absolutely fell in love with Shadow and his amazing and feisty little wife. I FLOVE this book, I mean seriously FLOVE it. I will definitely be rereading it and I 100% recommend it to anyone that enjoys slightly dark romance.

The perfect build-up with a surprise ending.

I thought I knew how Dark Heart was going to end. I DID NOT! I thoroughly enjoyed the book and found it to be a quick read, which in my book makes it a great book. When I find a book able to capture my attention and hold it page to page, I know I have found an author with true story telling abilities. Eve L. Mitchell has built on one story, Indian Summer, and found a way to share the same universe with her readers from a completely new AND different perspective. I loved reading Aaron’s perspective. I have recommended this book and Indian Summer to everyone I know who is interested in reading and even those who aren’t! I recommend you get this book and treat yourself to a story both enthralling and quite a bit risqué in the most enjoyable way.

I look forward to Eve L. Mitchell’s next book!

Do you know how sometimes you watch a film and just love it and then the powers at be bring out a sequel and you are so excited to see it but end up totally disappointed as it simply isn’t as good as the first one, well this book just smashes and then jumps up and down on that mould!

Although Dark Heart isn’t a completely direct sequel to Indian Summer and can be read as a stand alone, in my opinion it is even better than the first; and that’s saying something as Indian Summer was superb!

I am so very impressed with this relatively new author, if these first two books are anything to go by Eve L Mitchell is a talent that I will eagerly and greedily follow. Her style of storytelling is so cleverly fluid it just reels you in. The honesty of the character development is refreshing, we get to see the good, the bad and sometimes downright ugly sides of the people involved, written in such a way that you cannot fail to feel, recognise and understand their strengths and vulnerabilities, you simply become invested in them. As for the storyline, again, like Indian Summer it is a triumph with twists and curveballs that keep you turning those pages wanting to know what happens next but never actually wanting it to end. I absolutely LOVED it and eagerly await with bated breath and much drumming of fingers the next offering from Ms Mitchell. That means get a shuffle on Eve this fan wants more!!!!

I think Eve L. Mitchell has writing broody alphaholes down to an art. This book had me wanting to rage, made me cry, made me laugh and of course had me swooning right along with all that. If you’ve been longing for some good angst in an enemies to lovers read with a good dose of suspense look no further than Dark Heart.
I haven’t had a hero make me want to punch him and then hug him this much in I can’t tell you how long. Aaron is a flat out jerk at times, but when this man loves he loves hard. He’s definitely not the person who’s jumping for joy at babysitting a woman with a boat load of baggage, and he’s certainly not one to coddle her either. Especially when she’s the stepdaughter of a man he doesn’t even like. Where Aaron is harsh Lela is fragile, at least in the beginning. Struggling with her own issues and being flung into her mother’s lap, a mother who isn’t even there, she thrust right into Aaron’s world.
There is no sweet to these two for quite some time. Their chemistry is intense and the sparks certainly fly from the second they meet but it’s quick into enemy territory with these two. They battle it out while resisting that pull as long as they can, but ultimately love (and lust) win out.

Dark Heart blew me away! Gotta love and enemies to lovers romance, especially when the story doesn’t change course and the characters stay true to themself through and through! Absolutely LOVE Aaron and Lela!

Aaron is a no nonsense type of guy and has no patience or time for love yet alone having to put up with having Lela the brat under his roof. He tries so hard to keep that dark mantra about him but somehow Lela gets under his skin and in his mind.

Halfway through the story the intensity and suspense had me twitching in my seat- I was at the point of throwing in the towel and seeing what happened in the end lol ....... but of course that was just my mind trying to see what happens to them in the end. l totally did not follow my mind trick as the story was too good to skip around 😂

Dear heart lured me in from the beginning and bewitched be through and through! I absolutely hope to see more from Aaron and Lela-

In Eve L Mitchels follow up to Indian Summer we follow Aaron, the dark, broody and dangerous mechanic that runs an illegal fighting ring on the side with best friend Shadow.
Lela is the babysitting job he didn't want nor did he have the time for, She's not thrilled by this turn of events either and to say it's fun watching this pairs growing attraction and their denial of it would be an understatement.

There's plenty of action, blood spilled and family drama but at the same time many sweet and emotional moments that balance the story.
Side note I fucking love the support characters, the boys from Indian Summer pop in and Shadow with wife maria are a force to be reckoned with, Hoping Eve writes more about them.

A fantastic read.

This is the first time I have read this author and I loved it. This is an interesting story about Aaron and Lela. Aaron has an auto repair shop and a gym and runs illegal fight ring on the side. He is busy, moody and a little dangerous. Lela is a spoiled brat that after graduating art school in New York her father sent her to live with her mother and her new husband. Her mother went on vacation the day before she arrived in town and the step-father paid Aaron to babysit her. They hate each other and it was fun to see the growing attraction happening. There was so much action going on that this book held my attention the whole time. I could not put it down. The snappy come backs had me laughing. I loved the side characters also. I can’t wait to read more from Eve Mitchell.

I love this book. It draws you in and keeps you in. There was never a moment when I was reading that I wanted to put it down. I truly relate to Aaron and his coffee addiction, though I do love heavy whipping cream in my coffee, which I am sure he would be disgusted with. I enjoyed to theme of enemies to lovers and Eve L Mitchell has excelled at writing this story. The character development was amazing but the characters still stayed true to who they were, which I really appreciated. This book is part of a series and can be read as a standalone but I would very much suggest reading the first book, Indian Summer (an amazing book as well), as you get a lot of back story and its where you first meet Aaron. I can't say enough how much I loved this book and can't wait for Eve's next one.

I was actually participating in a RIRI for this bookend while it’s a stand alone the author does recommend reading the books in sequence - so I downloaded the first book ‘Indians Summer’ which I’m so glad I did as it was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I also enjoyed it when the characters popped back up in this book.

Aaron the dark brooding gym/garage owner makes an appearance in the first book, what I thought he was, he’s wasn’t, while still a heard, dark hearted character, you saw the other side of him when he was with his family, if you cross him your out, even if you are family.

This was Aaron and Leila story and while I loved the romance of it all the book also focused on the darker side and the trouble he tries to sort out to keep his family safe, it was a really interesting good mix. I totally over the relationship with Walter too.

I am so glad I found this author, I will be sure to follow her now & cant wait fur the next book, a banging 5/5! 💕

This one kept me reading until late in the night! To be honest, I wasn’t sure at first how I felt about reading Tattoo Neck’s story but I was quickly sucked in.

The overall pacing was really good. I liked the male POV and really getting to empathize with the MC so that you understood that even though he was shady, he had a good heart hidden behind all his asshole, tattooed exterior. I loved the epilogue since it tied it up nicely for me.

Things I wished had been in here: (1) A scene where Lela met Aaron’s mom and sister. (2) A friendship between Arielle and Lela?? But I guess since Colton and Aaron aren’t BFFs, that was out. (3) More Colton and Arielle because I’m greedy.

And please, I need Matt’s story. He’s still my favorite.

Love love love!
This story is a stand alone but the second book with some of the same characters. It’s so well written that it’s hard to believe it’s only Eve’s second book! Such believable characters and spot on local weather pattern and the frustration that comes with it.
You must read this star-crossed romance.

I'm super excited about this newer author, Eve L Mitchell has a great story-telling ability.
This has got to be your next read. It's the second book in the series, BUT don't panic. It reads like a stand-alone story. Eve L Mitchell has done a fantastic job with her characters and their world. I HAD TO READ IT TWICE! The characters are believable and the location specific details are great, and the weather woes really add to the suspense of the storyline. I can't wait to see what her next book is going to be.

Loved dark heart

I love Aaron's dark soul throughout the story. How his life was his and only his. His fight for keeping his family safe and would do anything to keep them that way.

I love the way Leila kept getting under his skin and no matter how much he pushed her way, she knew that she was good for her.

I loved Aaron in Indian Summer and was ecstatic when Eve decide to write his story. He’s everything you want in a bad boy and if you’re like me you’re completely jealous of Lela. Aaron pretends not to care but you know he has a heart of gold underneath that bad boy exterior. I just loved the heck out of him in this book. This book was such a great read and I know you will fall in love with Aaron like I did. #backoffhesmine #Aaronsgirl

First book ive read by this author and loved it.

Aaron is the all round bad boy but he has a very deep heart. He will stop at nothing to look after his fsmily, close friends and the old guy who lives across the street.

Then he is asked to look after the “brat” Lela, will their love hate relationship ever develop or will they just drive each other apart.

When Aarons life, friends and family are threatened he will stop at nothing to ensure he keeps them out of the way of the retaliation but will he drive everyone away.

Finished this great book in one night! I love me some alpha Aaron and I love how Lela came around, I was rooting for that. It started slow for me but the blurb was good, the author was new so I wasn’t giving up. I’m glad I didn’t. I love how heir relationship ended up especially after a ton of round and rounds. The book in its entirety was great, a recommended read. The author is no longer new to me and I’ll define adding her to my TBR list!

Dark Heart was a really good story/romance. I thought Aaron was the perfect Hero even though he could be an asshole at times. I really liked how he was so loyal to Shadow and eventually to Lela. I really like how the story was written in Aaron's point of view but there were times that I wished we got Lela's point of view to see what she was thinking at the point in time (especially when Aaron was in major douche mode). It was a sweet story, with twists thrown in that I really enjoyed (I like some action scenes with my romance :) )!

Brilliantly written. What a roller-coaster!

Aaron is a downright asshole. He pissed me off right from the start of the book as a person, BUT I was also able to relate to him on so many levels. He says and does, what we all think, but don't have the courage to say!
He is a major tough nut to crack, and doesn't bend for anyone. Not even Lela Morgan, the Brat he has been tasked to look after for a couple of weeks and slowly ends up developing feelings for.

I wanted to slap him silly at some points of the book, and had those "aaaawh" moments in others.

What I enjoyed the most about this book was the Author's writing style! WOW!! How captivating. Incredibly detailed and descriptive. I often felt like I was standing right there in Aaron's lounge watching him watch Lela. Feeling what he felt.

It's one of those stories that you forget you are reading and totally lose yourself in their journey. A definite must read!

This book is amazing! This author is a genius. I love how Aaron is this tough guy who kicks ass and takes names but has a softer side, even though he really doesn’t want anyone to know it. I really liked that some of the characters from Indian Summer made an appearance. Definitely a must read!

Great Read!!!

We were introduced to Aaron in Indian Summer and I was quite surprised to have his book come next! I have a love/want to smack upside the head relationship with Aarons character - in the end it's love. Really happy to have the characters from Indian Summer included this book. Also enjoyed the male POV - I normally read epic fantasies - and I can honestly say I am enjoying Eve Mitchell's contemporary world she is building - can't wait to see who she writes about next!
