An account of how a timid and unaggressive young man of 19 in 1939 was transformed by the inexorable pressures of World War II into a competent infantryman. The author served in two infantry battalions in the campaign in Europe from D-Day to VE day, from Normandy to Germany. The book provides a personal account of the war, with extracts from wartime newspaper reports, radio broadcasts and speeches. Picot joined the Hampshire Regiment which were to be in the first wave of the assault on Normandy and on D-Day, in their first assault, the Hampshires lost 64 soldiers and 118 were wounded.
