It shows caution ⚠️ with labeling your child but fails in addressing the need for the label. In order to receive help needed for some children the label is needed. In order to fix this we would need to make the resources available without needing the diagnosis as well.
This is an excellent mental health book on children. The information in it can help parents not to rush into the label and medicate "medical model" when dealing with mental health disorders in children. The media does influence children's mental health. Part of the drive to prescribe is in business and money, that is somewhat common knowledge.
The ideas expressed here are very balanced, and reasonable. For children. Dr. Shannon recommends no TV until 4 years old (the American Pediatric Association recommends no TV until 2), and yes violence in the media does effect the minds of children. Strong personal/emotional attachments are also necessary for good mental health. Excellent information even for adults with mental health disorders. Too much labeling, too much medicating in today's psychiatric communities
Shannon discusses the common mental health diagnoses in children and other common causes for the symptoms that lead to these diagnoses, including environmental stress and inadequate nutrition. Very reassuring to the parent facing behavior issues in her child. This is a wonderful companion to Daniel Siegel's Parenting from the Inside Out.
I found this book to be very interesting and helpful. I loved the insight about children's brains and how they develop and work. I appreciated the useful suggestions for nutrition, and have implemented several of Dr. Shannan's recommendations. This book gave me a much better understanding of ways to relate to and help my child.
it was a good read.. if you don't want to immediately drug your child with heavy duty medicines, maybe talk with your doctor about dietary changes and supplements.
