The Portals of Altameda

Rate this book
More Barliona adventures from the bestselling author of The Way of the Shaman LitRPG series!

The development of a clan is not as easy as it might seem at first glance. Enemies strive to play dirty tricks, friends strive to gain money for their own development, and "locals" strive to provide endless impossible tasks. It would be possible to somehow cope with all this, were it not for one "however": two mighty clans yearn to pass through the portals of Altameda, and quite by chance, Kvalen knows how. It remains to decide with whom to pass through the portals, to learn where they lead, and most importantly, what is to be gained by doing so. After all, neither Kvalen nor Eredani are about to turn down personal gain for no good reason.

Vasily Mahanenko is a fantasy author working in the new genre of LitRPG - the MMO-based fantasy and sci fi. His Way of the Shaman series took Russian literature by storm in 2012.

Vasily dipped into his college-days insider knowledge as a hardcore gamer in order to create a believable world of the virtual-reality MMO game. His bestselling series combines fiction and video games, telling the story of Shaman and his friends stuck in the ruthless reality of Barliona. He used his more than ten years' experience as an ERP implementation project manager to approach his writing in a well-organized manner, working to a strict schedule, a set of deadlines and even a budget. At the moment, the series boasts six novels with the seventh one in the works - this time the author expands on stories of Shaman's companions and those who helped and supported him in his trials and tribulations.

The first book of the series has already been translated into English, with more translations to follow, aiming to make the Way of the Shaman series available to the English-language reader in its entirety.

Vasily's other passion is space exploration which is why he now works on a follow-up series entitled Galaktiona. Set in a space-simulator based world, the first book of the series in already finished while Vasily works on its sequel.

I received a review copy of this book.
The Portals of Altameda is the third and final book in this series, and while it wraps up a lot of the loose threads, there's no answers for some of the questions that exist upon the entry into the second or third books. Many are answered to be sure, and others are simply shown to be irrelevant, but a lot of mechanics of the game remain unexplained, as do several subplots that got no attention in the final book. A shame that, but I suppose since they would have added little to the overall story, they were simply ignored. Nothing for it I guess, but I tend to like series that wrap up nicely, even if they do leave a few questions unanswered, though this one gives the feeling they were simply forgotten. It doesn't really matter though, since the series is done, and to be fair, it's a fairly reasonable ending, so no complaints here. If you read the other books in the series, and liked them, no reason not to read this one.

Good book terrible summarized ending

Story for this book started great, it had a main arc and then incorporated big side arc. However you just ended the series with the conclusion to the side arc...really! What about the main story for 3 books just poof you summarized the wrap up of everything in 1 page. Did you give up on the series when you are 90% done ?

Look repost an updated revision where the summary has you refocusing on the supremes and then start flushing out Victoria better...no way that strong "independent" women does all that was summarized at the end in a matter of a couple months. Then just close the main arc in and series in book 4. Boom great series.

Eye of Sauron?

Book 3 of the Invasion series. This one concludes the arc and series. I like the direction this one went as it takes the game a different direction. In search of a criminal, could be an alternate title to this whole series. It is interesting that this couples continue as a series and yet it is kind of neat to leave things undone hinting that life moves forward even after the story concludes. Overall, I like the premise and true RL societal issues that speak to the world building. Warning: Explicit language and adult themes.

Nice Conclusion

A different level of LitRPG writing, more of a political level. It took me a while to read, while his newest series I read the first book in a day,
