The garden display at the library a few weeks ago was a vortex I couldn't leave without a stack of books and this one is the one I would consider adding to my personal collection.
This book is perfect for the penny pinching wannabe flower gardener who can't follow rules. Complete with lists of plants to purloin from others and how best to do so.
Though not yet finished, I'm running out of patience with this one. I guess I was hoping for a lot less "duh" and a little more "a-ha!" I may have to save it for use as a reference (rather than "a read"). It may also need the spirit of springtime to make it more inviting. Still, I'm not sorry I bought it...yet...
I am planning both a vegetable garden and flower garden this year and I thought there were a lot of really useful tips and ideas. My favorites were learning that certain plants will keep away and fight pests. This will be a good reference book for yrs to come to make organic fertilizers and pest remedies, etc. Information was easy to digest and skim over parts.
Considering my low budget for gardening, I thought this book had lots of wonderful ideas. Unfortunately, most of the things I hoped to implement got vetoed... but I still have more of a garden than I would have if I hadn't read it.
The Frugal Gardener: How to Have More Garden For Less Money by Catriona Tudor Erler (Rodale Press Inc. 1999) ( 635). This is a book of garden tricks to increase your stock of plant material on the cheap. My rating: 7/10, finished 2002.
The book has lots of good ideas. Since I am an experienced gardener, I didn't find as many new ideas as a beginner might have. But I did find a few. The book might be useful for some gardeners to have on their reference shelf.
