Hans Christian Andersen (often referred to in Scandinavia as H.C. Andersen) was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories — called eventyr, or "fairy-tales" — express themes that transcend age and nationality.
Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Little Mermaid", "The Ugly Duckling", "The Nightingale", "The Emperor's New Clothes" and many more. His stories have inspired plays, ballets, and both live-action and animated films.
If there's anything that sets Andersen's stories apart from the rest, it's that they most often have an element of deep sadness in them. All characters in fairy tales go through a conflict and therefore (though not always) a period of emotional depression, but they're never described in such detail as with Andersen. To be sure, some of his stories don't even fit in with the rest as "fairy tales", and are more akin to Dickens, Hugo, or Vola; stories such as "She Was Good for Nothing", "The Story of a Mother", and "The Little Match Girl". These are stories about sorrow, poverty, and death. Not the kind of tales you'd read by the fire to a group of children. I can't imagine "The Little Match Girl", for example, without also think of Cosette from Les Miserables. When I think of "She Was Good for Nothing", I'm reminded of L'Assommoir. Even with tales about inanimate objects, Andersen somehow manages to evoke some sense of pathos, like with his sad story about the forlorn Christmas tree.
It's clear that Andersen intended to give children, the future of society, strong moral character and the capacity to sympathize. Several of his stories portray the hardships of the poor and misfortunate; those not gifted with wealth or good looks, and it's only too pitiable that society at large hadn't learned from these, for if so perhaps there wouldn't have been world wars, revolutions, and ethnic genocides.
Andersen's tales are well worth reading; do not content yourself with the Disney adaptations, they're nothing like the originals. Among his lighter stories, the story "Little Claus and Big Claus" is the funniest, though outrageous and kind of morbid. Some stories, like "What the Old Man Does Is Always Right" is basically a copy of "Hans im Glück" from Grimm's Fables.
His magnum opus is without a doubt "The Little Match Girl". No fable could compare to its poetic design and its power to strike you numb with emotion. It truly tests a person's humanity, for you'd need a heart of stone not to feel anything after reading it.
I grew up on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales and stories as I was born in the same town as him: Odense in Denmark. I almost like his stories better than his fairy tales.
