Mrs. Jenkins' class loves drawing dinosaurs...everyone except Doris. Doris feels bad when no one compliments her painting of swirls and blobs. It's only after a day at the museum that the class learns about prehistoric creatures and famous modern artists!

Rosemary Wells is an American writer and illustrator of children's books. She often uses animal characters to address real human issues. Some of her most well-known characters are Max & Ruby and Timothy from Timothy Goes To School (both were later adapted into Canadian-animated preschool television series, the former’s airing on Nickelodeon (part of the Nick Jr. block) and the latter’s as part of PBS Kids on PBS).
This is a good story about creativity and being different. Doris didn't want to draw a dinosaur, but she still made a beautiful picture. While it is an entertaining story, it's important to distinguish between independent art and following classroom instructions. Doris's teacher didn't seem to mind at all that Doris wanted to do her own thing, but it's not always the case.
