A collection of Native American bear legends considers why Bear lost his tail and the teachings of Mother Bear, and accompanying facts discuss different bear species and habitats. Original.
Interesting book with a mix of factual information on bears along with Native American legends.
I think this is a great introductory book, so I would use it in grades k-2. Students could work together in groups to write what they've learned on posters. They could split it in half to distinguish between fact, and legend. If students are not advanced enough to write it out, this discussion could take place during circle time, and the teacher could make a chart.
Received this book as a gift for my children many years ago, recently shared with my 6@4 year old grandchildren. They were fascinated, by the well told and illustrated native tales interspersed with factual information. Hope I can find some extra copies to share with their cousins.
03/07: The boys especially enjoyed the Seneca story, "How Bear Lost His Tail."

The illustrations are beautiful, and it's always important to teach our children about Native American culture. Keep this one in your classrooms and home libraries.
