This is worth a read for anyone interested in these majestic giants. Cactuses is Greek for thistle. The Saguaros' botanical name is Carnegiea Gigantea named for Andrew Carnegie who was devoted to desert research. Saguaros are 30 years old before they make their own seeds. 380 seeds weigh about as much as an aspirin. Every desert dweller from harvester ants to javelinas feast on the fruit & seeds. There is lots more plus my favorite in non-fiction....great pictures!
