Rate this book
A heartfelt reinvention of the Monday's Child rhyme, affirming the gift of all children.

"You were born in your very own month of the year
and the world was waiting to welcome you here
with daydreams and wishes and circles of love
and in turn you brought a gift from above...."

Every day is someone's birthday, which January's Child celebrates with creative attributes for each month of the year. More positive than the traditional Monday's Child rhyme, and geared for families to share among youngest and oldest members, this is a beautifully illustrated treasury sure to become a classic, evergreen gift for new babies.

I am babysitting my nieces tonight and it is the now middle child turn (as her younger sister was born yesterday) to choose the book and she chosen this one. January's Child: A Birthday Month Book is a children's picture book written by Andrea Alban Gosline and illustrated by Lisa Burnett Bossi.

Gosline's text is simplistic, straightforward, and lyrical. It is written in the style of the nursery rhyme "Monday's Child", but instead of using the days of the week, this book use the months of the year. The poem was written especially well and follows the rhythm and style of the original poem extremely well. Bossi's illustrations are wonderfully depicted in a soft tone and represented the text and tone rather well.

The premise of the book is rather straightforward. It is a heartfelt reinvention of the nursery rhyme "Monday's Child". It affirms that each individual child is celebrated, adored, and unique in a soothing and gentle manner. Furthermore, it is tremendously more positive than the nursery rhyme it is based on.

All in all, January's Child: A Birthday Month Book is a wonderful children's book done in the style of "Monday's Child". It is a wonderful, soothing, and gentle poems relating to the months of the year.

I am teacher and this book is great for my youngest class. It’s Wonderfully Tailor with poems that celebrate each month and making the child feel special for their birthday month.

The illustration is it’s beautiful and correlated with the poems seamlessly. I Also recommend this book for children who may not be the only child and just need to be uplifted now and then.

Fluid poetry inspires the soft, warm colors of the cuddly baby animals pictured for each month. The pictures and words are a majestically simple delight and an encouragement to all children. A wonderful bed time read aloud for parents to share with their little ones. The words are sure to soothe them to sleep, while sharing the special message that each birthday is unique and so are the gifts and traits of each personality.

January's child was a lion. It's about months. All the months are in there. I liked it because all the months are in there. Childs for months are the ones that have birthdays. People have the birthdays in months and the people are the childs of the months they have the birthdays in. -by Felicity

Just lovely. I'm doing "Happy Birthday" for my tales. We'll go around and ask each child what month they were born in and read the sweet description of each months' child.
