Everyone assumes Harry can't listen like he's supposed to, so it's no surprise that he doesn't respond during the hearing test at school. However, the test reveals it's not that Harry isn't listening, it's that he has trouble hearing. Harry has missed out on so much, but there is hope. Once Harry is fitted with hearing aids, he discovers the joy of all he had been missing out on.
A super sweet book that so many children will be able to relate to. Harry doesn't come when he is called to dinner; doesn't any questions in school; doesn't participate in PE; doesn't turn down the TV volume when asked; and misses out on so many things. People say he doesn't listen; finally, a school nurse tests his hearing and realizes that Harry CAN'T hear. It's a momentous occasion when the nurse says that he needs hearing aids and the people AROUND him actually LISTEN. Harry is fitted with hearing aids and the world comes alive for him. He can participate; he can respond; and he can interact so much more deeply. This is a wonderful book for children to discuss different abilities and different accommodations. It's accessible and brilliant. This is the book that special educators and speech language pathologists have been begging for without anything LISTENING. And finally author Fynisa Engler LISTENED. :-D
Harry Can Hear is a delightful picture book! Until I actually had it in hand, I hadn’t noticed what a beautiful cover it was, and that Harry is absolutely adorable. In fact, I didn’t even realize he was already wearing his “cool” hearing aids on the cover which shows how pretty and inconspicuous hearing aids can be. I love how all the grownups throughout the story are gentle and caring in their words and actions. A sweet well-written story that shows how childhood problems can sometimes be overlooked but easily remedied with a nonscary process and solution. A very cute ending follows the added bonus of discovering where on each page the ladybug will show up next!
Harry the Hedgehog is adorable! And what a great story about a struggle that kids can relate to or gain a new understanding through! I'm thrilled there are more books like this being written for my kids and grandkids to feel accepted and learn to understand others better.
