An outline of the Molly Maguire sagas from the point of view of a descendant of one of the executed Molly Maguire leaders. It describes the trial and execution of Alec Campbell, and it reveals how he was framed in order to get a major trade union supporter out of the way. The book also exposes the dirty tricks employed by the mine owners to destroy the miners union.
I borrowed this book from the library in my “deep dive” into the Molly Maguire to find hints to ancestor’s connections. A few chapters in and I knew I needed to own this one; not just read it. The author’s research goes more on the track of a genealogist and through that uncovers things I haven’t found in any other scholarly handling of the case. If you are seriously interested in the topic and the players this is a must read!
Great read, highly recommend. I grew up in Luzerne county in NE Pa and in an Irish neighborhood. Most of the Irish immigrated from Co Mayo, the West of Ireland. As such this book was a page turner for me and I could relate to the struggles of and unfair treatment of the Irish. They never gave up.
In light of all the facts that the author has uncovered, I would be inclined to say NOT GUILTY. Thank you Mr. Patrick Campbell for this well written book and for your hard work at getting the truth.
