I'm Andrew First. Leader of the Architects Clan and the City of Sangis. A million-strong horde of zombies will soon reach the borders of our lands. No clan on Earth has so far encountered such a threat. There are few who believe we have a chance here, but I refuse to give up. The Architects will face these zombies, and we will defend our City!
Rather bloody, but then again, since all of Andrew's powers rely on blood, I suppose this is inevitable. For what it's worth though, I liked the story, though there were times I was left wondering why he didn't do something else, though, most of the time, it was explained later. Pretty good as far as world building goes. We got to see a glimpse of other parts of the world, and even got to see a space ship. Yeah, an honest to goodness spaceship. That's the kind of thing I like to see. :) Well, it certainly looks like the next book in the series is going to be filled with retribution, and I can't say I'll be sad to see it. I'm always a big fan of seeing the bad guys get what's coming to them, and the next book promises that in spades. If you liked the first two books in this series, then you need to grab this one and have at it. It's a bit more brutal then the others have been, but I'm going to put that down to world building, though if the next one pans out as I think it will, I suspect this one is just the beginning. So, basically, if you'ree not a blood and guts kind of reader, you will want to skip this one, and probably the next one as well.
This fun little diversion to Africa doesn’t just last through this book, it lasts into the next one. And we (and the characters) all have to suffer because the mc got knocked unconscious by a sandstorm (that’s literally how he gets a slave brand).
All this isn’t to set up anything, just some weird clusterfuck series of intrigues and battles against African slavers who are fascist (I mean literally the leaders say amongst themselves “they used to call us fascists” and this is the only characterization we have of pre-sphere Africa). You’d think that in such an absurd book, in which the animal mutants constantly get more ridiculous, that this would be a laugh line. But it no longer feels like it. Everybody really still hates fascism in the future even though Sangis is pretty much a fascist state lol.
If you found this review confusing or meandering, that’s this book and the start of the next one.
Our adventure in Africa throws off the pacing, allows literally every calamity to start to converge on Sangis. I’m sure this is all to get the MC better demons from the Africans and take a bunch of loot, but that would have been better served by never doing the stupid slave shit and just fighting alongside the island mutants.
Book 3 of A Student wants to Live. This one takes us to Africa and into slavery. The book could be broken down into 3 parts. The setup, castaway, and welcome to the Roman colosseum. The concept of going from top to bottom and starting again to some extent is explored. This was an interesting way to deal with the idea of being between two enormous events without putting them together and risking feeling redundant.
There is very little that is settled, this is all set up. The pacing, where it leaves off, none of it is very good. I like the series so I gave it a three, on its own it merits just two stars. I expect more story from the author at this point.
I couldn't get into this one. I loved the first and when this hit Netgalley I mistakenly thought it was book 2. Sadly, it was book 3 and I apparently missed too much in book 2 to understand this installment. 🫨🙄😩

It’s nice to see the other characters advancing while Andrew learns new things about himself and the world as a whole. Interesting to see how different areas produce different types of skill sets based on how people live.
Having given previous books in this series a 4 star review, im upgrading this to a 5 star review. It just keeps getting better which is rare in long series.
