The star of books, television, and video is joined by Mother and Father Bear, Hen, Cat, Duck, and Owl in an excitingnew adventure. On his very first camping trip, Little Bear makes a new friend -- Cub. Cub is a wild bear who lives in the woods. Together they explore the valleys, streams, and waterfalls that Cub knows so well. Their journey through the woods is full of excitement, including a scary adventure for Little Bear and a happy surprise for Cub. Friendship and bravery are at the heart of this exciting new story that reunites fans of the original I Can Read books with those who love the hit animated television show starring their favorite bear. Written by Else Holmelund Minarik, the author of the five original Little Bear books, and illustrated by Heather Green, this is the first full-color picture book featuring the enduring character of Little Bear.
Else Holmelund Minarik was the author of the Little Bear series of children's books, which were successful as books, and were also made into a successful children's TV series. The Little Bear books sold more than 6 million copies worldwide.
Else Minarik was also the author of another well-known book, No Fighting, No Biting!
She was born in Denmark, and with her family immigrated to the United States at the age of four. After she graduated from Queens College, City University of New York she became a journalist for the Rome Daily Centennial newspaper and taught first-graders during WWII. Minarik lived in Nottingham, New Hampshire.
This heart-warming story doesn't quite rise to the level of charm and simplicity of the earlier Little Bear books I have read. The drawings are well executed, although I missed the story being paired with Sendak's illustrations. Friendship and bonds with parents and friends are the key themes of the story.
I tried to read this book to my 3 year old cousin because she adores the television series on Nick Jr. but I could barely keep her interest in what was going on in the story, since the characters looked different from what the TV show is like.
This wasn't one of my more favorite Little Bear books. Although this books tells a great tale of friendship and family, it was hard for me to stay interested. The illustrations do however have great detail so those were entertaining.
