Heir Apparent: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
What would have happened if Jane had been born male?

James Bennet is the perfect heir to Longbourn. He is always looking out for his sisters and mother, making sure they have the opportunity to receive proper education, and always making sure they have the guidance and direction they need. He purchased a small cottage to ensure that his mother and sisters had somewhere to live in the event that something happened to him and his father. He works tirelessly on the estate to ensure that Longbourn is profitable. He puts any additional money that comes into the estate towards ensuring that his sisters have dowries that are appropriate for their social standing.

The summer before the story began, James had done the Darcy family a great service, almost certainly keeping Georgiana from ruin. Between the debt owed to the Bennets and the younger girls being away at school, Darcy's objections to the Bennets are greatly lessened. Despite the divide in their social standing, the Darcys and the Bennets find themselves drawn to each other. Yet, given their differing situations, can their connection ever become deeper than just friendship?

Some portions of the story are copied directly from Pride and Prejudice. The story contains some mature scenes, although nothing is explicitly described.

Nice Story
3.5* rounded up
At Ramsgate, Elizabeth and Mary befriend Georgiana. They make their elder brother James aware of Wickham who writes to Darcy, thus preventing Georgiana’s ruin. The girls maintain a friendship via correspondence. They will eventually meet again when Bingley lets Netherfield.

There is no elder sister Jane in this variation. Kitty and Lydia are in school. The Bennet first born is James which makes him the heir apparent, of course. Mr. Bennet is still indolent and James runs Longbourn. However, when Collins shows up casting doubts upon his paternity and engages in villainous mischief at the prompting of Lady Catherine, the result is not without consequences.

Liking the premise, I found the book enjoyable, but much too long and containing too many unnecessary details—too much telling. I found myself losing interest because of it and had to put it down often to read something else or listen to an audiobook. I almost didn’t finish this one, but I wanted to know what would happen with everyone. I was moved by the touching scene near the end with James and Mr. Bennet.

While the book isn’t errata free, I do give props to the author for few typos, something important to me.

the Bennet’s first is a boy named James

Long book, works it’s way through an alternate plots of the Bennet heir. Pretty interesting but short on emotions that draw you into the story. I had a good time but Darcy AND James chew the rug of who can have the most guilt for everybody in the world.

Unusual and lovely

An unusual premise and an absolutely delightful variation inspired by Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice by Clarissa Joy Thomas.

This book was 200 pages too long. I hate to be so harsh, but the author has no concept of pacing. I couldn’t tell you what the plot is supposed to be. The author set up several different climaxes, but each was resolved rather quickly and unsatisfactorily. The main idea is that Jane is born a boy. That’s an interesting idea, but the author didn’t know what to do with it. There was way too much focus on side details and very little attention to the romances between the couples. I also found several typos and poorly written sentences. I think overall this book would have benefited greatly from tighter editing.

There was also some mild fatphobia. If that bothers you, I would avoid it.

Just too boring and too long. 2 dimensional characters. Stilted dialogue. I ended up skipping to the epilogue and ended up skipping through that as well.

I hate giving bad reviews because I admire anyone who puts themselves out there with their creative work.

There are enough 4-5 star reviews that it could just be me; I may not have been in the best frame of mind to enjoy it. So take my review with a grain of salt.

Enjoyable premise

Because the Bennett's eldest is a son, everything changes, since he's intelligent, committed to seeing the estate prosper, and committed to properly educating his four younger sisters. James Bennett, along with Elizabeth and Mary, are involved with rescuing Georgiana Darcy from the scoundrel Wickham in Ramsgate. Therefore, they have a prior acquaintance with Darcy and Georgiana when Darcy eventually shows up in Hertfordshire with Bingley and his family.

Although this book is about ODC, the title tells you that the Bennett's son is the overall focus. Not only does his diligence improve the Bennett's lives, but his personal storyline has far reaching repercussions. The usual villains appear, but Mr Collins is by far the most significant, and he's a doozy.

This is a long book, and in my opinion it could easily have been shortened by about half without sacrificing any integrity. The writing is good. However, the text is filled to the brim with absolutely useless details that do nothing to forward the plot or the storyline. Things like what they're eating, descriptions of the trim on dresses, who escorted whom into dinner and in what order they proceeded, etc, etc, ad nauseum. A period story like this must necessarily offer some descriptions to enrich and illustrate. In this case, the amount of detail is extreme and excessive. Some is good, too much is tedious. I started skimming and that's never a good sign.

I recommend this book for an original take on this material. However, be prepared to slog through a lot in order to get to what actually matters.

In this Pride and Prejudice variation the first born Bennet is James (instead of Jane) and it is he who informs Darcy of Georgiana and Ramsgate. Now the Betherfield party have arrived (including the Colonel) how does this all change their futures especially as Catherine and Lydia are not out and at school. Bennet is his usual uselessness. I would have liked more of the married life of the Fitzwilliams and less of the Darcys.
But an entertaining story.

I read over half of this book before giving up. What broke me? The point where (slight yet vague spoilers) Then, I realized that I was holding onto the sunk-cost fallacy and decided not to waste any more time. DNF.

What if first born Bennet was male? Interesting concept, but oof. This dragged.

The full Mr Collins arc, gets wild; he tries to poison people and there’s a whole hanging scene(?!) And it goes well past the usual “happily ever after,” deep into the marriage years.

It was just way too long. Could’ve easily been half the length. The pacing just didn’t work for me and I found a lot of it forgettable. Blah blah blah. Love the idea, not the execution.

I loved it!

The story contains some mature scenes, although nothing is explicitly described.

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. Some portions of the story are copied directly from Pride and Prejudice. What would have happened if Jane had been born male?James Bennet is the perfect heir to Longbourn. There are mild spoilers in the second paragraph, but nothing too surprising. I left out information on the bigger plot points and surprises.

In this variation, James Bennet is the eldest Bennet sibling. The author did an excellent job of showing how this would change the lives of the Bennets, their neighbors, and other familiar characters.

James eventually marries Charlotte and leases Netherfield Park. I enjoyed how the eldest Bennet still lived at Netherfield and Charlotte was still the next mistress of Longbourn.

Mr. Bennet was even more indolent than ever, allowing his son to act as master of the estate and unofficial guardian of his younger sisters before James was even ready for university. Mrs. Bennet improves because she isn't as concerned about the future, although the entail still worries her in case anything happens to James. She also feels motherly toward an orphaned girl.

All of the girls, including Elizabeth, are improved by the care of their older brother. I enjoyed seeing a closer relationship between Lizzy and Mary.

Georgiana, Colonel Fitzwilliam, and Anne deBourg play larger roles, with one of the best depictions of Anne I have read. Darcy and both Bingleys improve over their original behavior. Wickham, Collins, and Lady Catherine are villains.

There are some editing errors, but not so often that I found it distracting. The story is long with unnecessary subplots, but I feel they added to the story by showing what the other characters are up to while the main story advances.

In this Pride and Prejudice variation, the oldest child of the Bennet's is James Bennet rather than Jane. The parents are alive, but he runs the estate and takes responsibility for his sisters, Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine & Lydia. There are elements of cannon that work its way into the story. The usual characters are evil, if not very evil, but there is a bit of redemption. There are many couples that find their happily ever after, especially Elizabeth & Darcy. However, I can't say that I know who the main character of the story is. Based on the end, I think James but sometimes Elizabeth. There were also SO MANY unnecessary descriptions. I think there is a good story in here, but it needed more work.

a wonderful story

If you can imagine Jane Bennet’s character being male and the heir to longbourn then you will enjoy this story. James Bennet becomes the caring brother and best master of the estate even with Mr and Mrs Bennet being the same characters. James’ influence not helps his family estate prosper his sister’s benefit from his caring and concern. There are villains a plenty and angst enough to fill all my boxes when I really enjoy a story. This one is going in my favorites. I would say don’t miss reading it. The author was imaginative while keeping the storyline of the original.

A brother instead of Jane

The premise assumes that instead of Jane Bennett, a son is born. The girls have an older brother who acts as protector and runs the estate. The entail will be broken with his first child and he has managed to make Longbourn fairly profitable, enough for the girls to have modest dowries. With the arrival of the Netherfield party, events are altered with his actions. Mary is a more interesting, outgoing character in this book. The younger girls go to school. Elizabeth us fairly true to canon except her brother helps curb her opinions and give her a male viewpoint several times, causing her to think over various events. Mr. Collins is worse than normal and I didn't particularly like how that story line played out for the victims but it was understandable. My only issue was it felt overly long and seemed to drag about around the 75% mark.

Very Interesting

This variation is very well written, although not perfect. The Bennet family has a firstborn named James, instead of Jane. He is an excellent son and elder brother to his four sisters, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia.

He takes excellent care of the estate and when it seemed that his first love, since the age of twelve, is about to marry someone else, (Charles Bingley,) he proposes to and marries Charlotte Lucas.

The heir presumptive, William Collins, visits, causing many problems and also much guilt. But things work out for most of the numerous couples that are documented herein. Worthy of a read!

Excellent story of the Bennet family having a son that was born seven months after their marriage. He is everything that Mr. Bennet isn't. He sends Kitty and Lydia off to school, and he established dowries for his sisters. James runs the estate and keeps everyone on their toes. The only fly in the ointment is Collins who is provoked by Lady Catherine. He meets a just end as does Wickham. James married Charlotte Lucas who is a bit older, but he doesn't care. Anne deBourgh discovered that her mother and the doctor kept her from getting well. A long story but worth the read!

An original story that would have greatly benefitted from tighter editing -- by being cut back to 150 pages or so, as well as the correction of numerous grammatical errors. The author seems to be barely acquainted with the proper use of the past tense and the past participle, and, like the vast majority of JAFF authors, remains incapable of distinguishing between the verbs lie and lay, bring and take, come and go, etc.

JAFF writers in general would benefit from reading Mark Brownlow's delightful P AND P books if they cannot cope with Jane Austen herself.

Elizabeth and Mary visit Ramsgate with their older brother, James. During this visit they befriend Georgiana Darcy. James writes to Darcy when he finds out that Wickham is there. Mr Bennet lets James run the estate and it is better for that. Mrs Bennet is not as flighty as she has the security she craves in the original P&P. Lady Catherine pushes Mr Collins to do some very bad things and there are consequences for it. Several things in the story could have been tightened up but overall it is a good story that Stevie Zimmerman's performance for the audiobook makes it even better.

Entertaining

Interesting variation with many additional characters. Some were, in my opinion, unnecessary in that I didn't see how they added to moving the storyline forward, rather making it lag along in several places. Some of the language and scenes were unfortunate in a romance. Overall, I enjoyed the read, but in places, it was better to skim through the text and not get bogged down with whatever cross the author was carrying and felt the need to include.

I love it

This is quite an interesting variation. The author was able to 'masculinize' Jane Bennet in James; and it turned out quite well.

I would have liked an appearance of General Miller in the epilogue, as a miserable old soldier regretting his refusal to marry Fanny Gardiner.

Interesting Twists

Familiar characters plus a few more made for a good story. The tale includes a son as the Bennets’ firstborn, marriages between non-canon partners, and some personality diversions plus a really evil Collins with satisfying good riddance. Wickham also meets an untimely and unexpected end. A great collection of what ifs.

I found this book refreshing. It was based on Pride and Prejudice, but it had a fresh perspective on all the new characters. I enjoyed the new ones and also the fact there was a son. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. L. Brown

Absolutely Delightful!!

I actually had to read this twice before I knew what I wanted to say about it. Never have I read such a seamlessly perfect story. James Bennet really is everything Jane Bennet would have been, had she been born a male.

Too Long

This story was based on a decent premise; I lobe variation that don’t include Jane, Lydia or Mrs Bennet. This one just seemed to go on and on with some boringly detailed narratives.

Trite beyond belief. It really detracted from an otherwise promising story. It is really hard to fall in love with characters you feel would be an absolute bore to talk to.

The story is a bit long

The story is a bit long winded. There are parts that should have been shorter and some of the bedroom scenes are totally not necessary. Too sexual by half. The last 4 or 5 chapters were a trial to get through. I will not be purchasing anymore of her books

Just okay, mostly boring.

Tenses were wrong, words like fair/fare and stationary/stationery were incorrect.

A lot of modern language including journalist and having witnesses in a trial seated. That is not how it happened during the Regency; I’m not sure about modern Great Britain.
