Japan embodies the fascinating cross-section of a country endowed with a rich and varied culture, firmly imbued with traditional knowledge, skill and experience. The book features 50 of the best of Japanese interior design trends in Japan in different categories such as offices, bars, culture, living and shopping, from traditional tatami to modern minimal. The interiors presented in this book offer a glimpse into the eastern design and its philosophy of the use of neutral and natural colors to minimize feelings of clutter and the color black to lend definition and form; furthermore, it reveals the ingenious, minimalistic way of living and being.
Some of these designs are just amazing! I loved the office with the tatami floors and dug out meeting table. I think you called it a shoes off office. Wonderful.
This book describes places such as offices, shops, hotels and homes remodeled according to the principles of harmony with the environment, association between tradition and modernity, simplicity through the use of neutral/ natural colors (mostly white and wooden). The spaces seem immense and empty (even when they are not), light is everywhere and the furniture's design is very sober. Each place is accompanied by architectural comments about the choice of materials, the orientation of the building, the light and the personal concept developed by the architect.
These designs will not be for everyone. Some are amazing. Some are, well, questionable. Even by Japanese standards. And, of course, I am always drawn to the bathrooms and the bathtubs.
