Young readers will understand how to show genuine respect to their elders in this addition to the Living Lights™ series of Berenstain Bears books. Children will learn how simple biblical principles are the building blocks to creating respectful behavior. The Berenstain Bears Show Some Respect— part of the popular Zonderkidz Living Lights™ series of books—is perfect The Berenstain Bears Show Some
Stan and Jan Berenstain (often called The Berenstains) were American writers and illustrators best known for creating the children's book series the Berenstain Bears. Their son Mike Berenstain joined them as a creative team in the late 1980s.
Well everyone is being disrespectful. I really don't like seeing the parents act badly, though I understand why the author made that decision. I get that sometimes we're all that way, but I also think we should be leading by example. Seeing Papa Bear behave dismissively in front of the kids kind of triggered me, and set me against this story even if there is a solid ending that to me salvaged the book.
The Berenstain Bears are looking for a good spot to picnic. How do you make this a story? Why, have the youngsters disrespect their elders on each page so that you set up the climax - a lecture from Grizzly Gramps!
Moral: Respect your elders.
Length: This feels a lot longer than it is… probably just the monotony of the forest and the “not good enough” locations.
Favorite Line: “It’s about time I got a little respect around here.”
Overall Impression: Gramps probably deserves respect. We should listen to those older and wiser than we are. But that respect should have nothing to do with his ability to pick out a place to picnic. He calls himself the best “picnic-spot-picker-outer” and we thought his spot was a pretty big dud. There were much better locations throughout the book - the whiny family clearly didn’t want to be out and about anyway, given where the story ends. Grizzly Gramps may deserve respect, but he didn’t earn any here. Side note: the cover is disturbing. Kids saluting their parents like they’re fascist leaders in the 1930s may be the most disturbing part of this book.
I didn’t feel this book had the usual complete story I have seen in the Bernstein Bears books. It was only about respecting you elders but didn’t give many examples.
This book is one that works best if you pause and discuss the behavior. It shows poor behavior and has a lesson at the end. If you pause and talk about how each behavior hurts each person it can be a powerful lesson.
In The Berenstain Bears Show Some Respect the Bear family goes on a picnic. Brother Bear not pleased with the meal says yuck. Brother and Sister run ahead paying no attention to Mama who has asked them to wait up. Papa shares an old spot he use to go to when he was in school, but Sister was not impressed talking about how old it was saying yuck. Then Mama shares her and Papa's spot where they shared their first date, Brother unimpressed with the mosquitoes or how old it is says yuck. Gran shares the spot where her and Gramps had their first date, but Mama said they did not want to walk up that hill. Gramps then tries to make a suggestion, but Papa cuts him off. Hot, hungry, and tired Gramps cuts everyone off to give a lesson about respecting elders and quoting the Bible. Everyone learns the lesson and apologizes. Gramps picks out the pic nic spot, the back yard. Everyone got the respect they deserved.
I really enjoyed The Berenstain Bear books I picked out. The lesson in this one especially stuck out to me and I really want to read more of the Living Lights series. I think they have good lessons for everyone to learn or to refresh the memory. I really appreciate the Bible aspect added into this.
This would be great on a class room book shelf. I would be a little afraid to read this out loud in a public school just for sake of all the issues teachers can have with religious items. I would definitely recommend this to my church to have in the children's nursery in classes. It would be a really good individual read especially for the student you may be having respect issues with to discipline with out outwardly disciplining or asking them one hundred times a day or having to always tell the parents about the issues.
expected a lil bit more than it to say to respect your elders, (even though thats important) still was good but lacked what some of the earlier books did
Show Some Respect is a book about the Berenstain Bear family who heads off into the wilderness for an afternoon picnic. When mama and papa bear offer a suggestion for a picnic spot, Brother and Sister Bear make a blunt comment about Mama and Papa Bear's aged taste. The same scenario takes place when Gramps and Gran offer a suggestion; Mama and Papa make a coarse remark to their parents and disregard their suggestions. Finally Gramps gets fed up and talks to Mama, Papa, Brother, and Sister Bear about the value and importance of respecting elders. When the Bear family thinks about their actions, they realize that they were wrong and make their apologies. Together as a happy family again, the Bears head off to their favorite picnic spot, Gramps' backyard!
Show Some Respect is a book intended for pre-k through 2nd grade students. The Berenstain Bear family's relationships/ dynamics with one another will gather the attention of these young kids, and the remarks that the children make to their elders will connect students to the story (as it's likely that they've made comments similar to theirs). I also think this book will appeal to this age because of the Berenstain Bear collection and all of the wonderful lessons taught in the book series. I would implement this book during my classroom lesson on respect, a lesson that would be done at the beginning of the year. With my younger kiddos, we would discuss how the children were disrespectful, and how they really should have treated their elders. Next we would write out class rules and talk about how we could incorporate respect into these class rules. With my older kids, we would act out the part of Brother and Sister Bear and then discuss different and respectful approaches to handling their situation. This book could also be brought back out to reteach the concept of respect if there was ever a problem in the classroom.
What an absolutely valuable lesson! (for the Mama and Papa's as well as kiddos...) The Berenstain Bears have always been a favorite staple of my bookshelves for as long as I can remember, but since they started the Living Lights series the moral lessons have gotten better and better and even incorporate scripture. What could be better to encourage my girls! Here and there I have found a few manners books, some I really find annoying, but others are quite cute and portray a lesson quite well.
This book takes the reader along a journey to picnic with the whole Bear Family, grandparents included. It's an adventure, but also a great way to show and explain respect and why it is important and how it is possible for any age to need a reminder now and then. Forgiveness, learning and moving forward is a wonderful thing.
I cannot wait to add more and more Berenstain Bear books to our shelves for my girls to enjoy for years to come.

I want to buy every Berenstain Bears book for my future classroom! They all convey such important messages that students need to carry with them. But yet they all have a fun story line with intriguing illustrations to keep them interested. I remember these books more than most others that I read as a child. This, along with the other 2 books, this book conveys the message of respecting your elders. You can bring this into the classroom by bringing up whoever is in charge of the childs home. You can also talk about respecting other adults, no matter who they are. Then you can start to talk about respecting your teacher even when you do not want to follow directions, or are not in agreement with what they said. This book has a lot of different settings, and you could definitely use a sequencing activity in this too.
In this Berenstain Bears story the whole family decides to go on a picnic including Gramps and Grans. The cubs become very disrespectful in it comes to choosing where to set up the picnic. Papa Bear offers to do it a an old place he went to as a cub but Brother Bear shoots the idea down saying that its to old. Mama Bear suggests going to the creek but Sister Bears says that it is too dirty and filled with bugs. After Mama And Papa Bear begin to be disrespectful to Gramps and Grans Gramps call them all in for a family meeting explaining that that they have to be respectful to each other and to apologize. After the family meeting they decide that it would be best to have the picnic at Gramps and Grans house. There is only one main moral to this story and that is to be respectful.
Summary- The Berenstain family is heading out to eat as a family on a picnic. They all interrupt and argue with each other to see who has the biggest and best spot. Gramps shuts this down, and teaches them some respect.
Review- This is one of the first Berenstain Bears books I've picked up in a while, and it still ceases to bore me. It was a great little story about respect, and who to respect. The artwork was a little good, left much to be desired. The plot was a little forced but what do you expect.
The kids were running away from their parents. Their parents said 'you have to wait for us' but the kids didn't. The Grandpa said 'I have a perfect spot for a picnic' but the Papa wasn't being nice. The sister said 'that was a long time ago' to her Papa. They all said sorry and had picnic in the backyard and that was the end.
Other kids should read it because I will save this so I will learn to be respectful.
This is a great book for younger students to understand that even adults can be disrespectful and need to be reminded to mind their manners. This will make them feel less embarassed about making mistakes. This book had activities and questions at the end to help the teacher with discussion. Will read to my class if they are younger.
This is one of my favorite Berenstain Bears books! Brother, Sister, Mama, and Papa are all reminded that it is important to show respect to one's elders, no matter how young or old you are. Gramps and Gran reprimand the Bear family lovingly when Brother and Sister disrespect Mama and Papa, and when Mama and Papa disrespect Gramps and Gran during a family picnic.

badly done all the way around and the message was not clearly laid out. I was hoping this would be a good book to read to my daughter to teach her respect for me and her mother. oh well -.back to the drawing board
