In 1983, he decided to dedicate more time to artistic pursuits, and began to write and illustrate his first book, The Sleepy Owl, which was published in 1986. His best-known work to date is The Rainbow Fish, which has remained on bestseller lists across the United States since 1992.
Marcus does most of his illustrations for children's books in watercolors. He begins each book by stretching watercolor paper over a wooden board so that it won't warp when wet. He then copies his rough sketches onto the paper in pencil. At this point, he is ready to begin painting. For backgrounds and blended contours, he uses wet paint on wet paper to get a softer effect. For sharper details, he first lets the paper dry, then paints the final picture layer by layer. When the illustration is complete he cuts the paper from the wooden board.
For books that feature holographic foil stamping, he then tapes a piece of transparent film over the art and indicates with a black marker where the foil stamping should be. The foil stamping is then applied during the production process after the pages are printed and before the final binding.

Cute lovely childs story! Adorable characters!

This book was written by Marcus Pfister and translated by Rosemary Lanning. Snow was falling all night and in the morning there was no sign of the penguin family, but there were three lumps in the snow. One of the heaps of snow started to move and out came Penguin Pete, the father penguin. Penguin Pete woke up little Jim, the little boy penguin. Pete told Jim that they were going to let mother sleep under her cozy snow heap, and they were off for challenging and fun adventures. They threw snow ball at each other, and they found a sled, but alas when they tried to use it it broke. Then, father Pete tried to teach Jim to slide by himself, but Jim could not master that skill yet. The snow started coming down so hard that Jim could not see Pete and was lost. A friendly seal came along and Jim had fun swimming with the seal. The seal told Jim to get out of the water and stand on a hill so his father could see him. Finally, father and son were reunited. Jim was so tired that Pete carried him home and Pete, mother, and Jim snuggled up in a warm cave. Of course, Jim asked father penguin if they could do it again tomorrow.
Marcus Pfister also illustrated this book. It was published in Switzerland in 1994 and in the same year Rosemary Lanning translated this book into English. The illustrations are excellent and children at once by looking at the pictures will know that penguins live in a cold, snowy environment. this book is very fun for children to read. Inside the front and back covers are rows of small pictures of all the adventures father and son penguins had together. This is a delightful book and I highly recommend it for children, because it may solidify relations children have with their parents.

I love penguin books, but there wasn't really anything that made this one stand out from the rest of the penguin picture books out there. I like the illustrations, but the story didn't really grab me...and I thought it was strange that Penguin Pete was referred to so often by his name, since he's Tim's dad. I don't think kids would expect to hear Pete's name; they'd expect to hear "Dad".

Sequel book to the meeting of the parents. Follows on if you have read the first one but if you haven't then it starts pretty abruptly. Little penguin gets lost, exploring emotions and fears of being lost. Happy ending. Nice cute pictures but slightly off story.

Tim gets lost in the cold winter weather. Father Pete finds him and takes him home to Mother Pat. This would make a nice book for a father/son reading or event.

The two page sized pictures are very effective with children. They can anticipate the story from the pictures, and the actual reading of the text, supports their guesses.
