As she puts the final stitches in her perfect wedding dress, Sarah Love receives dreadful news which wrecks all her future plans. Heartbroken and humiliated, she leaps at a chance to make a fresh start away from her native Tullamore. Within a week she has crossed the Irish Sea, and is lodging with other young women in a house off Newcastle city centre, just a short walk from Harrison's the rundown knitting and sewing shop where she will work for reserved and troubled spinster, Lucy Harrison. Sarah now finds herself amongst people of different classes, religion and race, and when her Irish nationality is attacked she must discover the skills to survive. Putting the past behind her, she channels her energies into rebuilding the old-fashioned, neglected Harrison's into a thriving business and her wonderful sewing and design skills soon lead her down a new and exciting path in life. A path without love though, as she is too raw to consider romance again. Or so she thinks ...
So excited to find this Eire postmarked book package in my postbox yesterday! Thankyou to the author, Geraldine O'Neill for signing with lovely thoughts added to remind me of the Irish Fiction Fortnight contest where I discovered both author and novel. I am delighted! and anticipating more Ireland in March reading of Sarah Love
Warm story of a young twenties woman leaving her Irish homeland to begin a new life in a new to her world. Experiencing Sarah's tragedy turning to triumph as she takes tiny steps to embrace the freedom offered and the goodness of strangers. Sadness at attitudes and decisions along with costly outcomes in this portrait of life's changing realities during the mid 1960's.
A favourite part of this novel is the mid 1960's setting. Styles - both clothing fashions and furnishings, designers, shops, music and musicians; all well described, inspiring memories and reminiscing .
The ending offered sweet satisfaction - an extra swirl of icing on the cupcake!
I want the main guy character in this! He's adorable :) That is all. Oh and it was a good story about making a fresh start and being open to opportunities that come your way, otherwise you may just miss out. Lovely ending :)
I loved this book It was easy to read and follow I felt a bit sorry for the main character Sarah, she lost her parents, her sister-in-law didn't really want her living with them, definetely recommend.
