I enjoyed the second book better than the first book in this series. It is fine. However, this series is still just a American exceptionalism wet dream wrapped in frontier mythology.

The unimaginative inclusion of a stereotypical Ben Franklin figure was pretty lazy on Payne's part. The women are written by a dude who isn't completely misogynistic, but also has no idea what women actually care about and nor what pregnancy is actually like. The POC of colour who do factor in to the narrative are either 'Magical Negros' and 'noble savages' or straight up terrible people. The men are trapped in relentless loops of revenge and violence that is quite boring.

On to the third book in the series!
