"Laura Jean Libbey was author of sensational dime novel romances for women. In the course of her career, she completed 82 novels, enough one obituary noted, to fill an impressive five feet of shelf space." - http://chnm.gmu.edu/dimenovels/the-au...
Holy crap I had no idea what I was in for with this one. It's a soap opera gone mad! Turn of the century (I presume?) shenanigans! A very eligible young man is about to marry a beautiful young heiress. The heiress gets kidnapped on their wedding day by a man who imprisons her in a tower. Meanwhile the hero rescues a young woman from being abused by her family and takes her on as a protegee. The groom presumes that his fiancee has abandoned him and he returns to normal life.
The fiancee escapes from the tower on a deserted island and eventually reunites with her fiance. He has fallen for the young protegee in the meantime, but marries the heiress anyway out of obligation. But he learns that she did plan to elope with the evil baddie and threatens divorce when they reach their honeymoon destination. They never do as the ship gets into a horrific crash and she apparently drowns.
Oh the twists and turns! I loved it because it reminded me a lot of Wuthering Heights -- all the melodrama, hidden identities, lies and untruths. It's totally bad in a good way. It also has a benefit of being set in the Thousand Islands (my home region!) So that automatically gives it a boost.
Downloaded from Project Gutenberg after someone on APW recommended Laura Jean Libbey. It was exactly the read I needed right now, so 4 stars. (It's probably more 2-3 star quality, but so fun.) This needs to be adapted into a miniseries a la Downton Abbey.
This book is a romp through a lot of drama. I didn't think it would ever be over. Characters added throughout makes it crazy complicated, but it's basically the drama filled life of one young lady in the early 1900s. Read it for a book challenge for 2015.
Poor Hubert was cursed for most of the story. Z crazy Butler a evil captain and a vengeful deceased wife !e Liked Jessie and Hubert mother. Wished for an epilogue!!
