Both the Polynesian people and the First Nations of the Pacific North West have been working for some time to reassert their cultures by reviving their sea going traditions. This is an account of that from the Hawaiian perspective by one of the participants. It's the story of how Hawaiians revived the technology of their ancestral deep sea craft, their first expeditions and an attempt by people from all over Polynesia to get together in a grand voyage. The book is honest, he tells of the problems they encountered and did not necessarily solve, but what they learned along the way. For people with an interest in cultural revival by indigenous people or in what I would call vernacular boat technics, this is an excellent read.
I enjoyed this. The title gives a decent indication of what it's about. I'm now moving on to related books with more detail about the navigation itself.
