This is an explanation of how the Catholic Church came to hold such a powerful position in Irish society, and the factors central to the decline in the Church's monopoly on morality.
Although it was written in the late 1990s, I think Inglis does an excellent job of using sociology to forecast the future of Irish morality, especially within social policy and political culture. His analysis is honest and rooted in history. You can tell this is an Irishman who has a critical appreciation for the traditions of his country. This is where the book finds its center, which I found engaging and interesting.
I can't wait to build off Inglis's analysis and find our more about the modern-day Catholic influence of Ireland.
