Special Agent Jesse Colton had a strong instinct to say no to sweet, vulnerable Samantha Cosgrove. Not because he doubted her shocking claim—that her boss was sharing government secrets—but because the innocently seductive blond beauty made him want to say yes…to anything her heart desired. He was one of the Agency's finest. But Samantha wished someone had warned her that Jesse Colton was tall, dark and handsome. Now he was posing as her boyfriend to protect her from a dangerous web of deceit—but his own “pretend” kisses made her traitorous body wish he'd perform more husbandly duties….
Kasey Michaels is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than 100 books (she doesn't count them). Kasey has received three coveted Starred Reviews from Publishers Weekly, two for the historical romances, THE SECRETS OF THE HEART and THE BUTLER DID IT, and a third for contemporary romance LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (that shows diversity, you see). She is a recipient of the RITA, a Waldenbooks and Bookrak Bestseller award, and many awards from Romantic Times magazine, including a Career Achievement award for her Regency era historical romances. She is an Honor Roll author in Romance Writers of America, Inc. (RWA)
Kasey has appeared on the TODAY show, and was the subject of a Lifetime Cable TV show "A Better Way," in conjunction with Good Housekeeping magazine, a program devoted to women and how they have achieved career success in the midst of motherhood (short version: "with great difficulty").
A highly praised nonfiction book, written as Kathryn Seidick, "...OR YOU CAN LET HIM GO," details the story of Kasey and her family during the time of her eldest son's first kidney transplant.
Kasey has written Regency romances, Regency historicals, category books including novellas and continuities and a few series "launch" books, and single title contemporaries. She has coped with time travel, ghosts, trilogies, the dark side, the very light side, and just about everything in between. Hers is also the twisted mind behind her ongoing Maggie Kelly mystery series starring a former romance writer turned historical mystery writer whose gorgeous hunk of a fictional hero shows up, live and in color, in her Manhattan living room – to melt her knees, to help her solve murders, and to leave the top off her toothpaste. And, says Kasey, she's just getting started!
In previous books, we readers have been in Black Arrow, Oklahoma, following the invasions and discovery of the Colton connection.
This time, we are in Washington D.C. with Jesse Colton, an NSA agent loaned to the White House. He is the closest in geographical proximity to the property left in trust, so he is tasked with checking it out. He finds out that it is being used as an embassy, but the nation is moving to different quarters shortly.
Samantha Cosgrove is a senior staffer in a family friend's Presidential run. The family friend is a Senator. Samantha was taking care of some mail, when she looked at the contents of one and found what would be tantamount to an offer to special interests. She tried going to Jesse, and he finally contacted her. As they were working through the implications, they fell in love. After the situation was resolved, Jesse had bought the family house in D.C. and asked Samantha to marry him.
IF the book had been more than a semi-light romance, the chief of staff would have been in on the plot to install a President for special interests. The chief of staff is the one to whom Jesse entrusted the ONLY piece of evidence - and their protests to the contrary, it could have been hidden very easily.
Book #2 of my library book sale romance haul. This one was not great. Part of it was that I am just not in the mood to enjoy a story about political corruption right now, but mostly I just didn’t like the romance.
The hero had no personality except for being part Comanche (mostly depicted by his grandpa’s cringy “Native American wisdom”) and super duper handsome. As in, every single female character who so much as glances at him stops to declare “hubba hubba!” or something equally ridiculous.
I think the heroine was supposed to have classy Grace Kelly vibes but she lost any claim to poise or maturity when she dumped a plate of spaghetti on the hero’s lap when she got mad at him.
The one good thing I have to say about this book is that the proposal scene was cute and clever.
It was a cute little story. The side plot was very simple, there wasn't big revelation in the end. It was what it was since the beginning. I liked the characters. Samantha annoyed me when she acted childishly and naively, but luckily it lasted only a moment or two.
