Byron Renfield has spent years climbing the social ladder, and is now successful, handsome, independently wealthy.and a vampire. For over two centuries, he's held the honored position of Treasurer of his Clan's most sacred Trust. He's also been responsible for the financial security of the most elite of the immortals, the Dominie. In order to ensure his redemption, Byron isolated himself on a small private island, away from all temptation. It was a good plan.until the day Violet Deeds was stranded there. Violet is beautiful, sexy, outspoken, and a human, which makes her completely off limits. His society's canon may forbid relationships between vampires and humans, but will that be enough to help Byron and Violet conquer the intensity of their attraction to one another? Or will Byron succumb and take a little nibble? This is a fresh new twist on the classic vampire tale of seduction. Extremely erotic, The Claim has a hero that you'll want to spend eternity with and a heroine you'll envy. It's the first in what is surely going to be a fabulously successful series for Samantha Sommersby.
Samantha Sommersby has been writing romance since 2001. She was first published in 2005 and has also written under the pen name Lara Williams. Her background in the medical and specifically the psychiatric field is apparent in her work and allows her to bring a unique perspective to characters and stories. Sam loves to spend the day in her office creating—spinning rich tales, and weaving together interesting plots. Her aim is to create a hero that will literally sweep a reader off her feet.
She currently lives in Southern California with her husband of sixteen years, her twelve-year-old son, and a cocker spaniel named Buck. Sam's husband is a Social Worker who works with abused children. He's an avid sailor who loves to surf and you'll find bits of him in every hero that she's ever written. She describes her son as wonderfully sensitive with a sarcastic sense of humor. He plays the piano, composes his own music, is a competitive fencer, and worships video games.
Like most writers, she'll tell you that she's always desperately trying to balance her "real life" work, family, and writing. She still works a full-time job, writing in the wee hours of the morning or on weekends. When she does manage to set aside some "play" time for herself, you'll most likely find her reading a book, at the movies, or out wine tasting (she collects California Cabernets).
To date she's been publishing with Linden Bay Romance and is extremely pleased to be a part of their family of authors.
If Books 1 and 2 were combined into one book, I would give it 3 stars. It’s an interesting vampire world.
STORY BRIEF: This continues the story from Book 1 “Forbidden: The Claim.” Ren and Violet fell in love during Book 1. In Book 2 Ren completed his work moving and hiding financial assets and creating a false identity for himself. He then moves to San Diego to be with Violet. While there, they meet another couple, Christian and Isabelle. Christian is a vampire who is under the spell of a succubus. His wife Isabelle is pregnant and delivers the baby Sophie. Cain is the leader of the vampires. His henchmen kidnap Violet and Sophie. Cain plans to punish Ren and Christian for mating with humans. Ren and his friends make a plan to free them.
REVIEWER’S OPINION: I liked what happened at the end with Cain. I liked Ren’s plan for what was going to happen in the sequel (Book 3). The rest of the story was ok, but there were some holes. There was not enough description or detail about what happened and why for three events: the succubus and Christian, what happened to Isabelle, and the details about what Ren and his friends did after the kidnapping. I was also disappointed that one must read both books 1 and 2 for a complete story.
DATA: Story length: Kindle count 3715, a short story. Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: strong/erotic. Number of sex scenes: 3, each a few or several pages long. Setting: 2006 San Diego, California, and BaMidbar (Cain’s lair). Copyright: 2007. Genre: erotic paranormal romance.
OTHER BOOKS: For a list of my reviews of other Samantha Sommersby books, see my 4 star review of “Forbidden: The Temptation” posted 7/2/09.
This book is in first person. It is from the hero's point of view. As many of you know, I can't/don't read first person in romance. I didn't know this when I bought the book, but there it is. I gave it 3 stars because there is no need in giving it a bad review when it is my quirk.
~* 3.5 Stars *~ The Revolution Begins The second book in Samantha Sommersby's Forbidden series is quite a bit different than the first, The Sacrifice, even though it does further develop Sommersby's unique world and introduces us to more of the immortals in that world. In Forbidden: The Revolution we meet Byron Renfield, nearly four hundred year old vampire and treasurer of sorts to the powerful vampire elite, the Dominie. When a human woman shows up on Byron's island retreat during a deep mourning for the loss of his sister, Byron is instantly enthralled by her, falling in love with the scrappy American psychologist Violet Deeds almost immediately. But to love her, to claim her, breaks all the rules that Byron was ever taught as a member of the Dominie. Despite knowing that he gives up his immortality to have her, Byron can't stop himself from wanting, needing, and finally claiming the fiery beauty. That one bite, however, starts Byron and his mate on a path of redemption and renewal not just for them, but for the entire vampire race. The time for revolution is at hand.
Again written in first person POV with Byron as the narrator, I found him to be just as charming as Wes was in the previous novel, though perhaps lacking a bit in Wes' sardonic humor. There was still humor to be had, though, especially between Byron and his vampire consort and ex-lover Rita. This particular book was a bit odd in the way it flows, though. The first half deals almost exclusively with the abrupt and carnal beginning of the relationship between Ren (Byron) and Violet, reading more like romantica (erotic romance) with very flimsy narrative concerning world building and character development, in particular Violet's, and very explicit sexual narrative that encompassed most of the plot for the first half.
It isn't until Ren and Violet have relocated to America that the second half of the book starts to really pick up, and the overall arc of vampire revolution starts to really take hold. That, I believe, was for me the more appealing part of the book, but that's simply a personal preference instead of a complaint. I found the romance between Ren and Violet to be a bit rushed and perfunctory, and because that thread was so heavy in the first part of the book and not nearly as prevalent in the second, the two parts seemed a bit unbalanced to me.
That being said, it's a bit doubly disappointing because I really admire Sommersby's mythos here - I love the idea behind vampires and the religious dogma that has really stifled the whole race and left them suffering under the self serving rule of the ultimate narcissist, Cain. Yes, that Cain. The first vampire. While I have read other books that have offered up that possibility for the origins of the vampire race, I enjoyed how Sommersby did it here. The widening focus of the plot, the shift from romantica to revolution, became a fun, meaty read and I think this book really could've been truly exceptional had the two parts been more cohesively melded into one thorough story. As it was, the time it took to set up the relationship between Ren and Violet limited the amount of time dealing with the burgeoning revolution and that left me feeling a bit short changed.
What was there, though, was a nice read. I enjoyed getting to see Wes, Jennifer, Stanley, and Will again, and though I think I missed something between book one and book two of this series - maybe a short story published in an anthology that explained Jennifer and Stanley's marriage and their continued involvement in the paranormal? - I did end up enjoying this book a bit more than I expected to after the first few chapters. I look forward to continuing on with the series.
Forbidden: The Claim, is a vampire romance book written by author Samantha Summersby. Byron Renfeld, a vampire for two centuries, is a Dommie which means he has devoted his life to serving the clan. Those born immortals, like Byron, are chosen to serve in some way to work their way up, and if they serve well, they given an afterlife. Children of vampires that are born mortal are promised an afterlife. Byron works in securing the financial life to the Chosen by being in the position of the Treasurer of his Clan. His success is reflected on his own wealth that he brings forth in the book with his beautiful victorian home and life on the island.
Grieving for two friends, Fred and Grace, leaves Byron with letters from Grace's niece Violet. With these letters, Byron reads them and develops feelings for Violet. On a rainy night Violet shows up to Byron's home with her plans to visit with Grace being unaware that she had passed away. Together they share their grief and further get to know each other. Violet herself is an independent and a bold woman who has strong feelings for and wants Byron. Over the course of the story, she begins to understand he is a vampire, that he is forbbiden to her. If she takes these risks to be with Byron, he may lose his authority as the Dommie, which is losing his way to an afterlife. Violet may also lose her life. The rules of the Chosen are, that he is not to chose a mortal to love. Thinking that he will not fall for Violet deeply, they continue on into a sizzling relationship. Together their love is so strong, sensual and intense, that they take the chance of being with each other until Byron's past lover, Rita, comes and warns him that he will have to step down or be expelled. Bryan does not want to have the life that was like his father, which is exactly what Bryon is doing similarly. With wanting to keep Violet hidden he has Ruth, who is a strong supporter to Bryon as well, bring Violet home and keep her safe for him while he thinks over these events and to make plan if they can be together again.
Forbidden: The Claim is a very absorbing read, that I could not let go and put down. I had goosebumps reading parts of this story because I was feeling for Bryon, and feeling for Violet. Samantha Sommersby has written Bryon's story which he narrates with so much visual and emotonal insight with his words really captivate you into believing. The author even has Bryon reflecting on Violet's reactions and thoughts so naturally. You end up feeling her feelings and thoughts through Bryan. This was done outstandingly by the author Samantha Sommersby. With Bryon keeping himself isolated and sheltered in his home and you could sense the outpouring of love he had within him when he met Violet! She was so determined and strong that she faced up to Bryon during his anger when his fangs would appear. With her love and strength she would not give up her love for him. I even fell in love with these two characters. This story is the beginning of their journey. You won't find the ending to their story here, but you'll be begging the author Samantha Sommersby to give you a peek, to give you the rest of their story now. A definite keeper and start to Bryon's life that you'd want to spend an your life to keep knowing.
This interesting vampire world is worth 3 stars, but I gave it 2 stars because it’s unfinished. The ending is in Book 2.
STORY BRIEF: In this paranormal world, vampires eat normal food and drink. They don’t require human blood. As they get stronger, they can exist in sunlight. Ren is a vampire who successfully manages funds for the vampire community. He lives on a private island near his friend Grace. Violet and Grace (humans) have been pen pal friends for years. Violet comes to visit, not knowing that Grace recently died. Ren and Violet are immediately drawn to each other. Violet encourages intimacy but Ren refuses to have sex, fighting his own desires. It is against vampire rules to mate with humans.
REVIEWER’S OPINION: The story is told from Ren’s perspective. There is not much character development. Most of the story is she wants, he wants, but he refuses to give in. I didn’t feel the emotional pull, anticipation or passion that I normally like in romance novels. But I did like it because it was odd and a little different, for a vampire story. This is a very short story and unfinished. At the end, the problem has not been solved, but Ren has a plan. I was unsatisfied because I wanted to see if and how his plan would work. One must read the sequel “Forbidden: The Awakening” to finish the story. Both books are very short with each telling half the story. They should have been combined into one book.
DATA: Story length: 120 pages, double spaced. Swearing language: none. Sexual language: strong/erotic. Number of sex scenes: 4. Total number of sex scene pages: 15. Setting: 2006 on a private island. Copyright: 2006. Genre: erotic paranormal romance.

Byron is a vampire, and pwoar is he ever a sexy immortal. Once again, Samantha Sommersby took me to a world where everything around me fell away and I felt as though I watched a movie rather than reading a book. Byron is strong, masculine, yet vulnerable at the same time, and I loved that about him. He falls in love with Violet as soon as he sees her—but really he fell in love with her way before then by reading letters she had penned. When she comes for a visit he was unaware of, sparks fly, and the pair of them embark on a wonderful love affair that will transcend time.
Forced by circumstances to leave his home and island, Byron follows Violet to her world, where, yay upon yay, and much more yayness, Will and the cast from book one appear. I actually cheered loudly when Will came on the scene, loving his Englishness and character once again.
With everyone brought together, the cast must right another wrong and accept that although darker forces dwell in the world, they can be thwarted if a group of like-minded individuals band together. A fabulous book once again, one that I read in a single sitting. I love Samantha Sommersby’s voice and smiled right away with the first line, saying to myself, “Ah, she’s done it yet again. Snagged me from the start.”
Samantha Sommersby, also known as Lori James the owner of All Romance Ebooks/OmniLit, is shady.
I'm providing some links, but you can Google "All Romance Ebooks closing" and see what she did. ARe announced on December 28 they will be closing on December 31, the website will go dark, and any books that haven't been backed up or saved will be lost forever. Some customer have hundreds of books, and with the website being so slow since everyone jumped in to check on their books, no real way to be sure they've saved it all.
But that's not even the worst part. ARe is refusing to pay authors their royalties. They offered a shameful 10 cents on the dollar of what they are owed from the last quarter and flat out refusing to pay even that pitiful amount from the sales from December 27 on. Stealing from her authors and telling them to their face she will.
Don't give her any more money. She's taken plenty already.

This was a fluffy and enjoyable piece of erotica. The 2nd book in a series (I did not read the first) involves Byron and Violet now that they are married. He is a nearly 400 year old vampire and used to manage all the assets for the vampire clan. But he wanted Violet more than he wanted his job. The funniest part of the book was that vampires are supposed to be secret and yet everyone who meets Byron knows what he is and is totally cool with it. Except Byron who must have felt like he was wearing a neon sign. A one-sitting read, it was a nice way to pass the evening.
Hmmm, I appreciate the irony of the main character in a vampire book with the name Renfield...but this story (which is just part one, apparently) was just too short and too lacking in detail for me to really enjoy it.
Violet becomes stranded on Renfield's private island where he has isolated himself from temptation and humanity. As they become close, they will each have to decide how much of their current lives they are willing to give up to have a relationship together.
This is a book different than what I'm used to. It was done in the first person, male voice. This was a pleasant twist for me and was the second book in the series. The character development was limited, ( which might have been covered with the first book,) but the characters were so likable with intense emotions. I would enjoy reading more works in the future. If you see it don't pass it by.
It's done! Last year I read the second book in this series, " Forbidden: The Awakening." The first did give the information I needed for character development. Like the second, I sped through this at record speed. The immediate attraction between Violet and Byron was written out well. Now it is off to the third.
