Está bastante chulo leer un poema medieval en Alemán súper simplificado. A veces se hace raro porque al estar tan simplificado parece escrito para niños, y en ese estilo lees cómo asesinan a miles de caballeros o cómo un Rey ayuda a otro a violar a su mujer.

I loved this book. The reason I deducted one star I'll explain later.
The book is a simplified retelling of the Nibelungenlied, its text is in German, and it is particularly aimed at those learning the German language. It is set at "Niveau Drei, Ger B1"; that is, it's not for absolute beginners.
It seemed to me that there were features of the language and vocabulary which had been carefully considered to fit the text to its intended target; the repetition of certain vocabulary items and syntactic structures was such that I found myself thinking a number of times that the repetitions occurred at intervals I found very suitable, helpfully refreshing my understanding of vocabulary and grammar without being intrusive or too blatantly giving preference to the language learning aspect over the narrative interest. Indeed, I write that it "seemed to me" that the language learning aspect was a factor because in my reading I never became analytic about this, simply because the narrative interest was too great for me to do that.
The story is based on the Nibelungenlied, written by an unknown author. As to the date of its composition, "Das Nibelungenlied ist zwischen 1100 and 1200 geschrieben worden". It deals with themes of heroism, trust, loyalty, honour, glory, guilt, courtly protocols, and the like. Moffatt, in his translation of the Nibelungenlied for the Everyman's edition, wrote that "Stripped of its irony, the Nibelungenlied is tedious in the extreme, and can only be take seriously by someone in desperate need of a heroic past." In other words, at times the heroic conventions are clearly being made fun of, and this comes across even in this simplified retelling. Siegfried's wearing an invisibility cloak to help Gunther in the consummation of Gunther's marriage is a hilarious example.
Some readers may be uninterested in such subject matter, of course. For myself, the combination of the book's helping me in my learning of German language and culture, and the enjoyment of the yarn, made this book a real winner.
I've focussed on the retelling of the story; there are other elements to the book, including historical information, questions to test the reader's understanding, discussions of vocabulary, literary themes, and more recent cultural references to the material of the Nibelungenlied. These add value to the book, but they're elements I'll come back to. First and foremost, I enjoyed the story.
The illustrations are perhaps like those that might be used in a book read to children at primary school, but I enjoyed them; they're well done, according to their style, and they do serve to break up the text and make the book more visually attractive.
The CD contains a narration of chapters from the text - but not all; it also contains some of the supplementary material mentioned above. The standard of the oral reading is clearly superior to some of the downloadable mp3 readings that I have heard which have accompanied some self-published German texts for language learners. The narrator is obviously a professional, uses good expression and phrasing, and speaks clearly. (At times the reading is a bit quick for my ears, but that's always the case for language-learners, I suppose, and thus actually gives me a good challenge to my language abilities.)
I was disappointed that the narration does not include the entire text of the story; this is the sole reason why have awarded this edition four stars rather than five.
To those learning German who want to build their language skills, to learn something about German culture, and to enjoy a heroic tale told with some ironic humour, I highly recommend this book and CD.

مطالب زیر برای خودم نوشته شده و داستان کتاب را لو میدهد
زیگفرید پسر شاه زانتن، در راهی به دو نفر، نیبلونگ و شیلدونگ برمیخوره که ازش میخوان یه گنج رو بینشون تقسیم کنه. میگه شر میشه نمیکنم ولی بهش وعده یه شمشیر قشنگ، بالمونگ، رو میدن. قبول میکنه ولی باز آخرش از دستش عصبانی میشن و با هفتصد تا مردان همراهشون که غول هم بینشون هست بهش حمله میکنن. اون هم با همون شمشیر بالمونگ همه رو میکشه. اخرش یه کوتوله میمونه که یه شنل نامریی تنشه و میگه حالا به تو خدمت میکنم و پیشنهاد میکنه که گنج رو در غارهای فلان جا براش قایم کنه. قبول میکنه و شنل رو ازش میگیره و به خانه برمیگرده. در جنگل سر راه یه اژدهای سبز نزدیک یه برکه میبینه، اون رو میکشه و در خونش که در برکه ریخته شنا میکنه و رویینتن میشه به غیر از قسمتی روی شانهاش که وقت شنا یه برگ روش چسبیده.
به خانه برمیگرده. روزی میشنوه که کریمهیل، خواهر سه پادشاه بورگورلند خیلی زیباست. میگه باید بگیرمش. از پدرش دوازده شوالیه با لباسهای فاخر مخواد و میره اونجا. اولش برای جنگ میره ولی شاه گونتر باهاش مثل مهمان و دوست رفتار میکنه. یکسال اونجا میمانه و دختره را نمیبینه. بعد یکسال، شاههای دانمارک و زاکسن میان که با اینا بجنگند. زیگفرید هزارنفر شوالیه از شاه گونتر میگیره و میره شکستشان میده و برمیگرده. بعد برگشت مدتی جشن میگیرن و این بار خواهرشان را بهش معرفی میکنن.
گونتر درباره برونهیلد میشنوه و میگه من اون را میخوام. زیگفرید میگه کمکت میکنم به شرطی که بزاری با خواهرت ازدواج کنم. با کشتی میرن جزیرهش. در اونجا خودش را خدمتگزار گونتر معرفی میکنه. باید در مسابقه باهاش برنده بشه خواستگارش و گرنه باید بمیره. برونهیلد زورش زیاده. زیگفرید شنل نامرییش را میپوشه و به گونتر کمک میکنه تا ببره (پرتاب نیزه و تخته سنگ). برمیگردن و زیگفرید هم همراه گونتر ازدواج میکنه. در شب بعد از عروسی گونتر میخواد با برونهیلد بخوابه ولی میگیردش، دست و پاش را میبنده و از یه میخ آویزان میکنه و صبح قبل از آمدن خدمتکارا میارش پایین. فردا زیگفرید میگه کمکت میکنم. شب چراغها را خاموش میکنن و زیگفرید با شنل نامریی میره تو اتاق با بدبختی برونهیلد را روی تخت میندازه تا اینکه میگه زور تو (گونتر) بیشتره و من تسلیمت میشم. بعدش بلافاصله میره بیرون و گونتر ادامه میده.
ده سال گذشته و زیگفرید در نروژ زندگی میکنه (احتمالا نیبلونگنلند) و خبر ثروتش همه جا پیچیده و برونهیلد ناراحته و از شوهرش مخاد دعوتشان کنه بیان خانهشان. قبول میکنن و با خوشحالی میان. وقتی شوهرانشان در حال مسابقه و اینان این دو تا دعواشان میشه که برونهیلد میگه شوهرت نوکر ماست و کرومهیلد هم لو میده که زیگفرید تو را در نبرد شکست داده و اینا. برونهیلد بهش برمیخوره و ناراحت میشه و به گونتر میگه، اون هم به زیگفرید میگه و اونهم جلوی همه قول میده که زنش را تنبیه کنه. هاگن که شوالیه گونتره هم به کرومهیلد قول میده که زیگفرید را بکشه.
هاگن نقشه میکشه و به گونتر میگه و اخر سر راضیش میکنه، دو تا قاصد دروغین میفرسته که مثلا از سمت دانمارکیان که میخوان دوباره جنگ کنن و زیگفرید هم پیشنهاد درخواست کمک میده و شب هاگن میره پیش کرومهیلد میگه کمکش میکنم و اون هم قبول میکنه محل پاشنه اشیل زیگفرید را با علامت روی لباسش مشخص کنه تا هاگن مواظب باشه اونجا ضربه نخوره. دوباره قاصد دروغین میفرسته که جنگ منتفیه و به سلامتش تصمیم میگیرن برن شکار و اونجا هاگن وقتی زیگفرید داره از چشمه آب میخوره با نیزه میزنه اونجاش (بین دو شانههاش) و میکشدش. کرومهیلد میدانه کی کشتش ولی کاری از دستش بر نمیاد. طلا و دارایی زیگفرید را ازش میگیرن و هاگن، گنج نیبلونگهای زیگفرید را از نروژ میاره و در رود راین در جاییکه فقط خودش میدانه کجاست غرقش میکنه.
[ ] چندین سال میگذره و پادشاه هونها، اتزل، درباره زیبایی کریمهیلد میشنوه و شوالیه رودریگر را میفرسته تا از او خواستگاری کنه. علیرغم مخالفت هاگن، گونتر موافقت میکنه و کریمهیلد باهاش ازدواج میکنه. بعد از این چندین سال دوباره به فکر انتقام میفته و از اتزل درخواست میکنه که از برادرانش برای جشن تابستانی دعوت کنه. اونها هرچند هاگن مشکوکه قبول میکنن و با هزار تا از بهترین شوالیههاشون میرن. روز بعد از رسیدنشان، برادر در مسابقه، نودونگ، یکی از شوالیههای محبوب هون را میکشه. کریمهیلد قبل از نهار به برادر اتزل میگه اگر انتقام شوهر قبلم را از هاگن بگیری، زن زیبای نودونگ را برات میگیرم. اون هم قبول میکنه و سر نهار همراه شوالیههاش میره سراغ برادر هاگن که در پیش خدمتکارهای شوالیهها غذا میخوره. نه هزار خدمتکار و تمام شوالیه ها و برادر اتزل کشته میشن. برادرش به سالن غذاخوری اصلی میرسه و به هاگن خبر میده. اونها در سالن رو میبندن و جنگ شروع میشه. دیتریچ از برن درخواست میکنه اجازه بدن در جنگ شرکت کنه، اون همراه اتزل و کریمهیلد و همینطور رودیگ از سالن خارج میشن. همینطور شوالیههای هون میرن تو و کشته میشن. آخرش ساختمان را آتش میزنن. صبح میبینن ومرزرها هنوز زندهن. این بار رودیگ را مجبور میکنن بره. اون هم کشته میشه. دیتریچ باخبر میشه میره میگه جسدش را پس بدین، نمیدن، میره به زور بگیره همه شوالیه هاش در جنگ کشته میشن و تنها گونتر و هاگن زنده میمانن که دستبسته میبردشتن پیش کریمهیلد. اون هم از هاگن مخواد محل گنجش را بگه ولی نمیگه، اون هم هر دو را میکشه. بعدش دیتریچ میگه ای زن شیطانصفت مرگ همهی این نجیبزادگان به خاطر تو بود و اون را میکشه!

It's quite simple. The illustrations are a bit cheesy.
It's just one version of the Nibelungen story, easy enough to read even by a beginner.
An okay introduction to the story if you don't know it, referencing other stories and mentioning a bit about history and Wagner's take on the Nibelungen.
TW for rape and murder. (also, kinda misogynistic due to the era)

A huge chunk of my time this school year—and an explanation for why I haven’t had as much time to read—has been taken up by German classes at the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas. This is the state-run (and thus very cheap) language school that offers classes in all of the major European and Asian languages, and even some less common ones. (At the headquarters at Jesús Maestro, they have classes in Hungarian, Finnish, and even Irish!)
I am currently in B2.1 and go every Tuesday and Thursday, from 7-9:30. That, combined with work and trying to maintain a minimum level of exercise, has left me with far less time for reading than I’d like. It is fortunate, then, that we were assigned books from the school library to read for an exam. I chose this one.
The book is adapted to about a B1 level and I had no difficulty in understanding it. It is also filled with pages of exercises, meant to check your understanding, but as it was a library book I was forbidden from doing them (not that I was so eager!). The story itself was rather shockingly violent, particularly the second part, which made it kind of a fun read. I suppose I’ll have to try to read the original someday.

From a learning point of view, these books are very useful. The story is far too bloody for my taste!
