D. R. Kolata and C. K. Nimz, editors 2010. 530 + xiv pp. 978-0-615-41739-4 Geology of Illinois has been compiled from more than a century of earth science investigations in Illinois. For the first time, this information has been summarized and made accessible in one volume to help both geologists and non-geologists better understand how the state's mostly unseen geology affects, and is affected by, life on the surface. More than 200 color photographs, maps, and drawings illustrate the text. Topics include ? the history of geological investigations in Illinois; ? the impact of the state's tectonic and structural history; ? the properties and classification of its rocks and sediments; ? the rich heritage of its land, water, and mineral resources; ? the threats from its geological hazards; and ? the application of geological information to societal issues.
This is a very detailed book, the pictures are in color, and it's hardcover. (It's amazing they had so much to write about such a boring state.)
If you want to buy it, do it through the ISGS website. The price is only $35 + shipping. The ones on amazon are being sold for outrageous prices, and you support the ISGS if you buy from them.

This is the big gun; the complete story of geological history, features, and formations across the state. Not sure if professional geologists would agree with that assessment, but for the armchair geo-enthusiast, you're not likely to find a more thorough accounting in any other single source.
