This book did not just tell what I should do if I wanted to create a comic book. This guide provided examples, instructions, and most importantly, it explained why I needed to do these things when designing the comic page; think of each page in a comic as a piece of art, and find what anchors the entire thing.
This guide provided valuable instruction on how to create panels and direct eye movement of readers, providing several examples and explaining the purpose of each style. This book was not just showy in its instruction, but actually went into reasons for the specific hints, suggestions, and instructions. That is a book that helps one learn, and not simply copy and repeat. It provides rules and tips so that I can think for myself, using artistic and graphic design tools I have learned (from this book, classes, other artists, and just real-life situations). It breaks things down into formula basically.
"What kind of story do you want to tell, what kind of comic do you want your name attached to? What is your audience, and how do you get them engaged? Why focus on all of it at 1 single moment? Why not break it up into smaller, more digestible pieces so that your end game is realized more fully? Well, here are the hints, rules, pros and cons of each, and here are instruments and tools you will need to achieve your goal. Now go create!"
This book explains how the profession has been done in the past, how it has changed, and then encourages the reader to make the next changes, without losing sight of the rules and such forth.
This guide also breaks down the steps one would need to get their work into a reader's hands. From collaborating with already set professionals, to how to burst unto the web-comic scene successfully, to the mindset one needs to possess to the grueling (yet fun and rewarding) work that is necessitated to create and deliver an entire universe of characters and stories. In short, this book is encouraging and positively beneficial in the regards of helping a creator learn what steps and actions are needed to create a comic book (and graphic novel).

Good instruction on the drawing/storytelling side. A little less useful to me on the production side, though (blue pencils, etc). Using programs like the Smart Trace function in Illustrator, I can scan pencil drawings and put them together in a program like Comic Life. Now that's just THEORY. Whether or not I ever find the time and motivation to actually DO IT is another story....
