Detective Melvyn Stone shares his mind and his body with the ghost of a career criminal. The two could not be any more unlike each other but join their mental forces together to aid in solving a series of college campus murders.

The dark crimes committed were perfectly matched by the moody colour palette that featured here. Perhaps the tones were too moody though, as much of each page merged with the shadows and I, on occasion, confused the characters when struggling to make out their facial features.

Another of the elements which continued to confuse me was the two entities that existed inside Stone’s body. The focus remained largely on the murders being committed and I found my interest and intrigue heightened by this blood-soaked mystery. When it returned to Stone’s confusion over what was occurring to him, as well as the horrific nightmares he suffered from and the monsters who visited him to warn him of some future doom that would befall his person (or persons), I was less sure of just what was going on, however. This criminal inside him also had some sickening thoughts that I detested reading about, but I understand that they were to build his character. Having them so closely aligned with the hero of the story was still jarring, however.

This collection was released almost a decade ago and yet no other instalments seem to have been crafted, meaning no sure resolution has been granted and I have left this eager for answers when it seems none will ever be forthcoming.

Detective Melvyn Stone and James Wyatt, whose spirits joined together when The One spared Wyatt from death, are on a mission to try and balance out good and evil. The premise is reminiscent of both Haunt and Brother Voodoo. Styx is a demon that wants the soul of Wyatt. There is also a serial killer afoot, and watching Detective Stone try to solve the case while dealing with his “shadow” Wyatt was interesting. I didn't see the ending coming at all.

The writing in dense and there is a lot of story here. The artwork is not my cup of tea but conveys the story clearly. This isn't the best comic that I've read, but it is certainly worthwhile and provided me with some solid entertainment.

This is good stuff! Good story, good art, good characters, it has it all. I look forward to more Styx & Stone and I encourage anyone who enjoys horror comics to give this a try.
