Rate this book
The Acts and Monuments of the Church, also known as Foxe's Book of Martyrs, is a comprehensive historical and theological work written by the English historian John Foxe. This book documents the history of the Christian church from its earliest days to the mid-16th century, with a particular focus on the lives and sufferings of Christian martyrs throughout history. It includes detailed accounts of the lives and deaths of notable Christian figures such as St. Stephen, St. James, and St. Paul, as well as lesser-known martyrs from various parts of the world. The book also provides a critical analysis of the political and religious upheavals of the period, including the rise of the Protestant Reformation and the persecution of Christians by the Roman Catholic Church. Foxe's work is notable for its vivid and often graphic descriptions of the tortures and executions endured by Christian martyrs, as well as its emphasis on the role of faith and devotion in their lives.

Reading the things that these men and women went through bc of their Faith was hard at times as well and astonishing. Couldn't be more proof (to me) of the existence of God. These men and women would not have died for something they didn't truly believe or KNOW to be real. I recommend this to any and all

I loved teaching this book to young high school students. The reaction was nearly universal. They thought it would just be sad and depressing to read about so much death, but they were all encouraged by the joyfulness of such great souls. It is no wonder it has been so beloved for so long.
