I like this book because I looooooove horses and ponies, they're my favorite animal. It even says in the book that the white patch by it's hoof is called a sock. It teaches you how to ride and what to wear when you're riding, to be safe and I also really wanted to ride a pony or a horse and I saw a lot of horses and I hear some by the stable near our house.
My first hand experiences with horses is over 20 years old, so and I needed to brush up what I know for something I'm writing. Kid's books are great for getting condensed knowledge without being too wordy or technical.
This short book covers the basics of horse ownership for young readers. I like that it includes a lot of safety tips because equines are VERY LARGE prey animals and can act unpredictably. The language is geared more towards riders in the UK. I grew up with mostly Morgans and Arabians, so the parts about ripping out their manes by the roots so they look thin and sad (a.k.a. “pulling”) and cutting their tails short as well as phrases like “most ridden horses wear shoes” had me scoffing. Overall though, a decent introduction.
Really informative book on grooming of your horse, mucking out a stall, how to put on a bridle, and how to ride. This book reminded me of my Poppy who taught me all the essentials when I had a horse.
