Cameron Nation: Going All-In To Save His Country

Rate this book

Frustrated with the current political climate self-made billionaire, Chris Cameron retires from a successful hedge fund to focus on philanthropic endeavors. With the notoriety received after he competes in the World Series of Poker to raise money for his newest charities, the Tea Party member is introduced to the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. A driven, charismatic, and brilliant leader by nature, Cameron soon finds himself invited into the elite world of professional politics.

When Chris is asked to be the running mate on the GOP ticket, he leaps at the opportunity. The duo is elected and with the assistance of a super-majority Republican-controlled Congress they quickly implement a far-reaching agenda to restore the United States to its rightful place atop the geopolitical stage.

Cameron Nation tells the story of how a street smart kid from the suburbs of New York City leverages a deep understanding of economic theory, the business world and the capital markets combined with the savvy of an experienced poker player to provide overwhelming strategic support and gain the trust of the new president and the growing conservative movement.

Author, David Carraturo is a life-long resident of Tuckahoe, a predominately Italian-Irish American community in Westchester County, New York. He has spent over thirty years working on Wall Street and is married and the father of three daughters. An avid poker player and organized crime/World War Two buff, he spends his free time with his family and exercising the mind and body to sustain happiness and success.

He loves to read a multitude of topics, both fiction and non-fiction but his true passion is anything related to World War Two as well as economics and politics. If you would like a novel reviewed, he is more than happy to review your work. War stories, Mafia reads, poker, economics and general American history would be his sweet spots for an educated review.

The Cameron trilogy includes Cameron's Quest, Cameron Nation: Going All-in to Save His Country and Columbus Avenue Boys: Avenging the Scalamarri Massacre. Columbus Avenue Boys earned Honorable Mention for General Fiction at the 2012 Hollywood Book Festival, was optioned for screenplay adaption and has received recommended read reviews from Kirkus, Midwest Book Reviews and Writer’s Digest.

The three novels are unique. Cameron Nation is his "Conservative Manifesto" so those with a liberal mindset beware. Columbus Avenue Boys is an epic story about the Scalamarri family tree and their life throughout the 20th Century. A mafia story with a whole lot more! The young adult years of Chris Cameron, Sal Esposito and Tony Albanese are revealed in Cameron’s Quest. Chris, Tuckahoe’s golden boy, ventures off to the University of Texas on a football scholarship to better his life while Sal and Tony earn their education on the streets as enforcers and earners for a ruthless organized crime family. Family blood is thick and the trio bond together to persevere through life’s rollercoaster.

Quote:
"I truly believe every and anyone has the ability to write that one great novel based off of their life experiences." David's storytelling is derived from personal experiences which he twists into a historical setting. His goal is to tell a good story but to also educate the reader.

Chris has come a long way since his childhood, growing up in the middle of mobs, wiseguys and the loyalties of close-knit families. The Columbus Avenue Boys are now men, independent, free of the neighborhood and the lives they could have become trapped in. Having run far and fast, Chris is now a billionaire family man, retired and enjoying what life has to offer, while remaining heavily invested in the heart of politics with his ability to lead, debate, charm and organize. It is that charm and intelligence that gets him an invitation to run as the Vice President on the GOP ticket.

Now firmly ensconced in the political arena, the newly elected Vice President becomes part of a powerful force to make sweeping and monumental changes in government policies. Will his past aid him in getting his point across to his political enemies? Will they see he is a force to be reckoned with who will stop at nothing to see his agenda come to fruition?

Is Chris about to show that anyone can reach their dreams if they put forth the effort needed and work with single-minded purpose? Can he enact the changes needed to make America the power it once was or will bitter enemies and the dregs of the press bring him down through innuendo and muck raking?

CAMERON NATION by David Carraturo reads like an insiders’ diary to the underpinnings of politics, policy and hope for a nation in distress. Mr. Carraturo delivers a fascinating tale of political polices gone wrong, the efforts required to correct these policies and the supposed benefits to change. With a blend of fact and fiction, CAMERON NATION often reads like an insider’s view of the Washington movers, shakers and policy makers. Insults will be flung, power struggles will be played out and one man will prove his worth in terms of integrity, honor and his love of his country and the people who made it great.

David Carraturo’s writing is engaging, enlightening and entertaining. His characters pull off clever humor, daring moves and through it all, the three friends from Columbus Avenue always have each other’s backs. Mr. Carraturo’s treatment of time evolving is spot on, as we travel from one time to another and watch as the natural evolution of each character unfolds. If you want it all when you pick up a book or a series of books, want to envision personal growth and maturity and actually have a real-life type of hero to embrace, flaws and all, take a look at David Carraturo’s work, I think you’ll be amazed when the pages fade away and you become part of each scene, each page and each chapter. Highly recommended reading for those who like some thought provoking reading that ends much too quickly!

I received this copy from David Carraturo in exchange for my honest review.

Christopher Cameron has led an interesting, varied life. Born from an Italian mother and an Irish father, he grew up in Tuckahoe, New York with his older sister Sabina. Growing up in a close knit community, he has retained many friends from his childhood. With a background in the military, football and an American history and economics double major from the University of Texas, Chris tackles the business world with the same hard work and determination he showed growing up.

His interests in poker, politics, economics and world events eventually pays off in the most exciting challenge of his life.

A great read, smooth flowing, with a lead character who is both inspiring and believable. The secondary characters are well formed and add a lot of flavor to the novel.

I received this copy from GoodReads FirstReads and my review was unsolicited.

Chris Cameron seems like a do-gooder by all accounts, but alas he has a dark past. The author weaves a complex story of local New York history, including immigrant history of "back in the old neighborhood," how an ordinary man can rise to the American presidency and the current mess of political affairs in the US today.

What I found most compelling about Cameron Nation is the extensive amount of research the author conducted on American politics, especially in regard to conservatism. I also was blown away by how well-versed the author is in poker playing, since there are many poker-playing scenes, which appropriately explain Cameron's popularity and rise to fame.

Overall, Cameron Nation is well-constructed, incredibly researched and extremely provocative. I highly recommend this book to anyone, despite their political beliefs.

This was a very entertaining book, right from the start. The politics gradually grows on you while the story progresses. The characters were fun. I can only imagine walking down a dark alley and seeing Sal & Tony coming towards me. Definitely a good read.

I enjoyed Cameron Nation. I loved the opening poker sequence and the
action flowed smoothly. It was easy to follow and the politics made a lot
of sense. The characters were engaging and funny at times. As a woman in
her early twenties, I would recommend this book.

I thought it was a great read. Loved the local references and the shaddy characters. I learned more about politics and economics from this book than I did in four years of college.

It has been my pleasure to read Cameron Nation. This book hooked me from the beginning. Learning about the main character, Christopher, was an amazing ride. His journey through life was informative and kept me wanting to read more. When Christopher became Vice President of the United States it captured my attention. All the way until he became President. Taking place after Obama's term. Being a
long-term Democrat and this book covering a Republican administration was a different twist for me. I'm not much into politics but this book told me things about the other Party and how they wanted to run the country, how to abolish the federal income tax, states no longer requiring federal assistance, taking away unnecessary federal jobs and thereby creating privately-owned company jobs, setting up
border control to Mexico, etc. I had a hard time putting it down and did not from page 151 until I finished page 305, the end. I have recommended it to pretty much all my friends and even some friends on Goodreads and would recommend it to anyone. Enjoy your journey as you read this one. The author has another one, Columbus Avenue Boys, which goes into more detail about the characters and I can't wait to pick up a copy of that one.

Carraturo does a fantastic job in his first book. He simultaneously tells an extremely entertaining story, explains conservative political theory and provides a thorough history lesson across various subjects in Cameron Nation. Each part is needed for this novel to come together, and each one is completed successfully.

The characters endear themselves to the reader. Whether it is Chris Cameron dominating the financial and political world or Big Tony and Sal joking around in their home town, they are all engaging in their own individual way.

Carraturo doesn't try to shove conservative principles down your throat, either. He presents current issues and offers solutions, all very timely as Republican candidates line up for the 2012 elections.

And if you ever wondered what it felt like to be in the middle of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, you are in luck, as Carraturo takes you through exactly this- round by round.

Enjoy!

Cameron Nation was a good read. One part was very entertaining and provided an engaging story of a fictional man who rises from a lower middle class upbringing to be the most powerful person in the world of politics. Along the way he befriends many influential figures, but also stays grounded by remaining loyal to his roots - his blood brothers from the neighborhood, Sal & Tony. Great fun reading about these guys and I also enjoyed the opening poker tournament which segued nicely into flashbacks of the life of Chris Cameron. Now for the politics, this story provided a great deal of insight into economic and political theory. Also, I might add that there are many topical areas that are front page news today - creative destruction, the misery index, the US energy resources & policy, reforming the tax code, Iran and Mexico unrest...Very forward thinking.

Wow! How can I sum up this book in only a few words? In Cameron Nation, author David Carraturo has written an epic saga, along the lines of "The Godfather" and such stories. When you finish this book, you may feel as though you have lived a whole lifetime, or watched a complete miniseries, or eaten a satisfying 4-course dinner. Cameron Nation combines current events with the author's vision of a possible future America, successful and revitalized, in the hands of a president and administration who base their decisions on common sense instead of greed and political gain. Everyone should read this book! You will come away with a renewed sense of pride in, and hope for, a once-again great America. My only question is: Where is Chris Cameron? We need him!

This is one very good book to read. Opening the story with a prologue that includes a murder caught my attention. I kept reading more to see where the story would go. The author, David Carraturo, provided a story that is a wonderful mix of mystery, murder, politics and philantrophy. The section dealing with poker I found interesting to read considering I do not play cards at all. The political policies described in the story are intriguing. The Ten-Point Plan is truly thought provoking.

I recommend this book highly.

I thought Cameron Nation was a very good read and timely. The characters were engaging, funny and I found myself truly in the life of Chris Cameron. The opening poker sequence, while I have a hard time understanding the game, provided the perfect venue to segue into flashbacks of the life of Chris. His dealings with world leaders, power brokers, friends and his family were all conveyed in very realistic fashion. Well done.

Loved, LOVED this book. The book is a fictionalized story of a man who ends up becoming President of the US. What I loved, however, is the detailed information enbedded in this novel explaining supply side economics vs Keynesian; the explanations of failed Obama policies; and the explanations of how our economy arrived in such a state as it is in today. I have read all of this before by different conservative authors but Mr Carraturo has an excellent way of explaining all this in clean, clear, crisp prose that makes it easy for the average reader to understand and accept. Chris, who becomes the President, espouses the principles of Ronald Reagan. He goes on to explain why Reagan's policies were so successful. Now who doesn't remember the financial times of Reagan's tenure fondly???

This book should be required reading for all people who are on the fence about to who to vote for in the 2012 election. Republicans already know who they will vote for and diehard Democrats will vote King Hussein Obama even if he succeeds in destroying the US between now and election time. The people in the middle, however, would greatly benefit from reading this book. Personnally, I plan to loan this to ALL my independant friends from now until the election.

P.S. Mr Carraturo felt that Columbus Ave Boys was his better novel. I disagree. This book is so relevant today and serves as a great learning tool. Oh, if only we could have a President with policies like Chris Cameron......

Cameron Nation was a book I was surprised I liked so much. My father recommended it to me to read to learn about politics. The story was so entertaining that I did not mind the steady doses of politics and economic theory explained and playing out throughout all sections of the book.

I thought Chris Cameron and his interactions with his family and friends were very realistic and the dialogue and setting were crisp and fluid. The prologue was gruesome but cool and well deserved. I recommend this book to people of all ages and I am 18 and going into college in the fall.

This book was not for me. I am bummed as after reading the summary and other reviews I was really looking forward to this book. For me, there was just way too much detail, too much going back and forth with the poker tournament, too many names - I just couldn't keep up. My brain overheated. Half-way through the book, I had to let it go. The prologue got me depressed.

I was a Goodreads winner of this book. I am hoping there are others who like it and appreciate it more than I could. It just wasn't for me.

Oh, the perfect political world for me. David Carraturo nailed it on creatig a political leader for the ages. Chris Cameron looks, feels and acts like a genuine person with one goal, to take care of his family...even when his family is the entire United States of America. Great read, loved the poker and interweaving his personal friendships with his long time buddies, Sal & ony was icing on the cake. If Chris Cameron were in Washington, things would definitely change and for the better. I recommend this book to all.

Intriguing story about what our nation can do to recover from the NObama administration. Written as a fictional story with some excellent ideas on ways to turn our country around. ‘They’ (fictional President & Vice President) used many hard tactics to accomplish their goals. Some really good ideas that ‘liberals’ would never allow to happen in real life. I was given a free Kindle download of this book.

OK This review for me is a mixed one. I'm very much up with the political scene and I was intrigued with the idea of this book. It starts off with a scene in Florida and looks like a mafia style killing. Then the book goes imediately to the so called present day where the main character,Chris Cameron is President and meeting with a Mexican leader. I found that chapter to be one of my favorites. But as the story progresses it goes back and forth from present and past events. The writer does this to explain certain happenings in the story. We learn about Mr Camerons roots in NY and how he loves to play poker and that he's made it in the business world and is a self made millionare. I have to say that I really didn't get the whole poker thing and was somewhat bored. I loved the characters and would of liked reading more about them and less about poker and quite frankly less politics. I loved the behind the scenes of intrigue in Washington and would of loved to see more of that back ground. I belive Mr Carraturo has a few different stories he could write from this one novel and would like to see. I did like the ending which I wish we could have in real life.

For those readers who love poker and politics I would recomend this read.
