MRS. COLE ON AN ONION ROLL And Other School Poems by Kalli Dakos, pictures by JoAnn Adinolfi (Paperback) by Kalli Dakos found in a third grade classroom Found with a teacher named Cole This book has a great quality and quantity of the poems. Showing school and life events turned into poetry.
This book is comprised of short poems for children. The book is colorful and full of illustrations that incorporate the poems. The books are silly and easy to read. They are all relatively short and of a an elementary reading level. The books are mostly nonsense but a few are more realistic. The book was fun to read and also an easy read and the pictures and colors helped grab the reader’s attention. The book takes poetry lightly so that children won’t be overwhelmed or intimated when being introduced to it. Also almost all the poems are school related so that the students can make connections and even if they are silly can still be somewhat educationally related. We chose this book because it is by an author not as well known as Shel Silverstein so they can broaden their knowledge of authors, but can see similar work to poems they have probably been introduced to such as ones from Shel Silverstein’s work.

A collection of school poems will be sure to grab attention of students. The collection is a combination of all types of poetry. The collection ranges in topics from frogs to basketball to losing teeth. Children can relate to these poems and possibly be inspired to write their own poetry.
I would use this book to provide a model to get students to write, especially during a poetry unit.
This book is appropriate for K-6. According to Scholastic book wizard, the grade level equivalent is 4.5.
This is an adorable book full of poems about school. It is a little difficult for some early readers but would be a great resource to have in the classroom and just read from a little each day. The school theme is awesome as well.
this book consists of many different poems. it has 40 pages, and since they are all poems students can pick their favorite ones and read them. they are very short and fun.
