No one suspects the diminutive seller of feminine fripperies to be a U.S. Marshal in disguise. But that's what Maggie Davis is. So when the intriguingly handsome stage driver turns out to be her number one suspect, she's surprised at the turmoil she feels. Can the sweet, caring man she's come to know be the same scoundrel the sheriff and other townspeople so viciously malign? If the perpetrator truly is Cal McConnell, then justice will be served. Even if it breaks Maggie's heart.

Maggie and the Maverick carries a crisp, beautiful brightness… a blend of warm, bubbling banter and steady faith that makes every moment fresh, tender, and alive. Maggie and Cal move through danger and calling with their hearts steady before the Lord, and their playful moments added a lift that made me smile right away. I love Maggie and Cal. They will stay in my heart like lace snagged on a tumbleweed… completely unexpected, a little amusing, and impossible to shake loose.

Maggie’s quick thinking and guardedness made me love her immediately. Cal’s unflinching presence and tender heart gave him a depth that is real and deeply endearing. Their connection has such gentle effervescence beneath the surface, and the writing carries it beautifully … vivid, warm, and perfectly paced.

The faith woven through this story reached me in a very personal way, because so much of Maggie’s walk felt familiar to my own heart. Her whispered prayers rose from places I know well… that mix of courage and trembling dependence on the Lord. “Lord, give me strength to do what I need to do, show me what I need to see, and please protect me.” I pray that and live that every second. Her longing to trust again, her hesitation, her bravery… all of it echoed inside me.

Her question felt like a shared heartbeat: “Lord, is this wise? Can I risk handing my heart over to someone again?” And the verse she remembered, “In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me,” settled into me with quiet strength. The way Maggie lived that truth felt like watching my own heart on the page.

Cal’s own journey, especially the line “God had been working on his heart…”, reminded me how much God loves us and how faithfully He equips us to walk with surrendered steps. His growth added an unexpected tenderness that deepened the whole story.

I’m grateful this story exists. God placed it in my hands and in my heart at the exact moment I needed it most.

Readers will love this story who appreciate heartfelt western romance, sparkling banter, and characters whose hearts are anchored in Christ which allows them to love with sincerity, strength, and grace.

I am sad that my adventures with the McConnell brothers is over. It’s been quite an adventure and I loved every case these brothers picked up to solve.

Cal, with his easy smile and fun personality, felt like a fan favorite in Money Creek, Idaho even if the sheriff had it out for him. His forgiveness of his father and his tender care for him showed how much Cal had matured in the span of a couple of years. His becoming a stage coach driver was a twist - I had expected him to continue working as a ranch hand for Alec or be assisting as a deputy for US Marshals with Trace. His charm, wit, and steadfast loyalty came out in full view in this book. Maggie was fascinating as an investigative agent for US Marshals. Her intelligence and dedication were unparalleled, even if she didn’t trust Cal. I enjoyed their banter and how their friendship bloomed. The plot had extra helpings of twists and turns, both in chasing down the stage coach robbers and in the lives of the townsfolk. I loved catching up with Alec, Trace, and the rest of the McConnell clan.

If you enjoy historical romance, you will love this book. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of the publisher via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Maggie and the Maverick is a fun Western romance where opposites attract.

I just love a quick read with lots of complexities, great characters, and an inspiring faith-filled message or two—which this novella blends nicely. Maggie is a complex and easy to love character that I connected with immediately. And Cal is just as easy to love and root for.

I love that this isn’t an insta-love type of story, giving the atmosphere and anticipation more depth, wit, and fun. The banter throughout was so enjoyable as well as the tension. The tender and meaningful elements of trust and faith touched me so deeply.

First Line: A handsome man couldn’t be trusted, Maggie Davis reminded herself, and a girl would be wise to watch out for ugly ones, too.

Maggie and the Maverick is another fun read by Erica Vetsch, about another one of the McConnell brothers.

Cal is too charming, and Maggie is too wary. Cant they really trust each other? It's fun to watch their relationship grow throughout the story.

If you enjoy Christian fiction set in the old, wild west, then you'll want to add this one to your TBR list.

Believing in spite of the evidence

Cal’s story nicely ties together the three McConnell brothers’ lives. There is finally the resolution of who the bad guys are and their leader is and they are brought to justice. I had guessed who the boss was, but it was nice to see it played out on the page.

Cal is a great guy that has overcome much in his past and proved himself to be Godly and true. Maggie has secrets to hide until her job is done, but she never expected Cal McConnell! She learns he is not as she first judged him to be and when he is accused of crimes, she is determined to prove him innocence. They are good together and the McConnell clan gets a HEA.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

Hidden identity, vicious outlaws, a hero with a past, & a he falls first/opposites attract romance! Erica Vetsch weaves another exciting Western tale in Maggie and the Maverick, the next book in the Brides of the West series. I’ve loved getting to know the McConnell brothers & was so excited to read Cal’s story.

Cal McConnell’s determined to put his wayward past behind him. He’s secured a position as a stagecoach driver, but faces the dangerous prospect of being robbed by a vicious gang each time he travels. When a lovely traveling saleswoman who’ll be frequenting his route catches his eye, he wants to get to know her. Knowing she’ll be staying at his brother’s & sister-in-law’s house in between travels makes seeing her irresistible. But, she acts suspicious of him & pushes him away at every turn. Will he be able to convince her his feelings for her are real?

U.S. Marshal Maggie Davis is undercover trying to catch a vicious gang of stagecoach robbers. While posing as a traveling saleswoman, she’s secretly trying to figure out who keeps tipping the outlaws off when law enforcement stages a trap. Though she’s attracted to handsome, flirtatious Cal McConnell, she learned long ago never to trust a man. But, the more time she spends with him & his family, the more she’s drawn to him. When Cal’s accused of being part of the gang, she has to decide if he’s falsely accused or just another man who’s lied to her.

I loved this story! Full of plenty of romance & action, it’s a quick story easily read in a day. Cal’s such a delightful hero whose golden retriever personality is the perfect opposite to Maggie’s cool demeanor. I loved seeing Maggie’s softer side in her interactions with Cal’s little niece Rose, & her swoon worthy whirlwind romance with Cal.

The mystery was fun to unravel & it all comes down to the wire after Cal’s accused. The exciting conclusion had me on the edge of my seat! I loved the way Cal goes after Maggie & the HEA ending.

Highly recommend! Though part of a series, it’s easily read as a standalone. I received an advanced copy but also purchased the ebook through Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.

“Agents who worked secretly for the U. S. Marshal’s office couldn’t afford to let anyone that close. Which made Maggie the perfect candidate for this type work. She didn’t trust anyone anyway.”

Erica Vetsch has re-released her series The Brides of Money Creek, as part of The Brides of the West series with Wild Heart Books. Maggie and the Maverick is the third book in the Brides of Money Creek sub-series.

A historical romantic fiction novel set in the Old West, Maggie and the Maverick has a bit of an unusual premise. The stage has been robbed multiple times near Silver Creek, and US Marshalls are secretly sent in to discover who the thieves are. One undercover Marshall is Maggie Davis, who is to ride the stage back and forth, posing as a salesperson for ladies’ unmentionables. A very amusing incident occurs as Maggie meets our hero, stage driver Cal McConnell for the first time.

Both Maggie and Cal have had very hard knocks in life that have caused them to be slow to trust. As Cal realizes, “Trust is built up slow.” If only he knew just how slow!

While both try to guard their hearts, what will happen when they both prove untrustworthy? It’s like hearing the Oregon Trail disaster music playing, this time not only for any romance between Cal and Maggie, but for their bruised hearts as well.

Fave secondary characters are Georgia, Jack, and Angus. Georgia for her loyalty and willingness to listen to people who have messed up. Jack, because he’s not very brave or confident, yet he’s a wild card. Who will he help when the chips are down? He’s a great catalyst to story action. And Angus. Stinkin’ drunk, no- good, tavern vermin Angus. Maybe no one is beyond redemption.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“It’s been my experience that people who are suspicious of everybody are usually hiding something.” - Cal

“I’ve been paying lip-service to trusting God and not being afraid of what men can do to me, then turning back to do things my way.” - Maggie

“I don’t think Cal will survive much more of you doing your job.” - Alec

“Her experience told her once a scoundrel always a scoundrel, and it was the ones who pretended to change that needed watching the most.” - (Maggie)

“She played you like a fiddle, and you danced like a trained bear.”- Powers

“Both of them taught us how much we needed God’s love and forgiveness.” - Cal

Maggie and the Maverick by Erica Vetsch is a Christian Historical Romance. It is the 6th book in the Brides of the West series. This book combines a jaded U.S. Marshal, Maggie Davis, with Cal McConnell, a stagecoach driver with a past. Life taught Maggie not to trust men with charming smiles and winning ways, which makes her the perfect undercover investigator for a string of stagecoach robberies. An unusual first encounter leads to more for the pair.

Cal worked hard to put his troubled and wild past behind him. He finds himself attracted to Maggie, who supposedly came to town to sell ladies’ garments. As the two draw closer, the author builds suspense and intrigue, leaving the reader eager to discover the truth behind the robberies. They work to try to solve the crimes that escalate from just robbery to also including murder.

I loved getting to know these characters. Maggie’s fierce dedication and determination, and Cal’s reluctant willingness to trust Maggie, make this story unforgettable. The story moves at a pace that kept my interest and kept me reading.

So if you want a Christian historical romance, check out Maggie and the Maverick by Erica Vetsch and the other books in the Brides of the West series.

Maggie and the Maverick

Maggie and Cal’s story is a good one. Maggie is a US Marshall sent to town to uncover the cause of the frequent stage robberies. She’s initially put off by Cal’s extroverted friendly personality, but it’s not long before he surges beyond her past hurts to her heart. But she’s undercover and can’t tell him, and even though she trusts him, mounting evidence that he’s involved threatens to derail anything growing between them. It’s up to Maggie to find the real threat before it’s too late!

There’s sweet romance (although it felt a little rushed), exciting mystery, and some suspenseful parts! This story had all the elements I love it in! This is the 3rd McConnell brother book, and reading the first two would be beneficial but not necessary to enjoy this story. It’s a fast-paced read. The ending was really satisfying to me, especially the resolution to the mystery and the uncovering of the real culprit, and the final pages are super sweet. I do feel this book nicely wraps up a few loose threads from the rest of the series in a great way.

Maggie and the Maverick is the 6th book in the Brides of the West series by Erica Vetsch. This story does follow after books four and five in the series, so it is best to read these in order to get the whole story. The author does a good job of introducing characters and events, so it is also a good stand-alone story. In this story we follow the third McConnell brother, Cal, as he drives the stage. With many hold ups when money is transported, Maggie, a U. S. Marshals has been sent to town to investigate under the disguise as a women's clothing salesperson.

This is a sweet Christian historical romance that is well written and easy to read. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding who the person behind robbing the stage was. I found the story inspirational with how caring Cal is toward others, especially his father. This story brings out how much the brother's lives were change with the care and second chance they were given by a lady when they were younger. I especially enjoyed catching up with the characters from the previous stories. I liked the interaction between the bakery owner and Cal and the reason for it.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

What a fun story this was to read. From the beginning it caught my attention. Poor Maggie has the misfortune to have her luggage open just as she is ready to get on the stage. What was inside sure would make me blush. Oh the shenanigans started right away when Cal tries to help Maggie. She sure didn’t want any help and doesn’t take kindly to Cal. I like that she is very independent and is dedicated to her job. I haven’t heard much about a woman Marshall during this time period so this story really intrigued me.

Cal is quite the gentleman but gets on the wrong side of Maggie from the moment they meet. He tries everything to be friendly and helpful but it is not reciprocated at all. He has his hands full trying to keep passengers safe as they board the stagecoach. There is someone that is not to be trusted but who could it be?

With suspense the two main characters thrive in this continuing series. Cal’s father doesn’t have the best reputation but I don’t think it caused Cal to be bitter at all. In fact he seemed to treat everyone with respect. Get ready for a great adventure in the west where stagecoaches are vulnerable and faith plays a big part in this enduring story.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I always enjoy reading a clean and sweet Christian historical novel where the storyline has both a lot of action and great characters. This book has both of those. The two main characters meet in a somewhat humorous way at the beginning of the book, but it only takes a short time for the more serious action to begin. Maggie Davis is a U.S. Marshal who is working undercover to help discover who’s behind all the stage coach robberies. Cal McConnell, a stage coach driver, has experienced some of the holdups and is becoming increasingly concerned that each one becomes more violent. Maggie and Cal have the same goal—-to discover who is behind the robberies—but they each have suspicions about the other. It was fun to see the romance grow between them and what they had to overcome to find their happily-ever-after. It wasn’t long into the book that I thought I had identified the mastermind behind the robberies. Even though it turned out that I was right, the storyline was still exciting all the way to the end of the book. I voluntarily received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

Maggie and the Maverick is a wonderful historical fiction novel with two strong lead characters and a mystery to solve! You’re not going to want to miss this one! It’s also book six in a wonderful series. Six books to add to your to-be-read pile? Yes please! I never turn down a good challenge!

Maggie is a law-woman. And she goes undercover as a ladies’ clothing salesperson to try and figure out who is robbing stage coaches.

Along the way, she meets Cal. He’s had a checkered past but is a new man now. And he’s determined to do what’s right. But he’s also maybe too good to be true? Or at least that’s what Maggie thinks. She’s a bit jaded and very much wanting to protect herself.

This was a sweet historical fiction novel with a good bit of romance as well. You won’t want to miss out on reading this one!

This book is part of a series, and although it definitely works as a standalone, I recommend reading the others too. Maggie is an undercover lady marshal. She doesn’t trust men anymore and when she meets Cal she doesn’t know what to think of him. She is in town trying to help solve who is robbing the stagecoaches. Cal is a driver of the stagecoaches. He is very intrigued by Maggie. Cal has stolen before but that was a long time ago, and he has changed his ways but there are a few in town that still can’t trust him. I really liked this story! It grabbed my attention right off the bat and held it all the way through the story. I loved Maggie and Cal. They were a great couple. They definitely had some struggles, mostly with trust but I love how it worked out. Good Christian content. I also enjoyed seeing characters from previous books in the series again. Overall, a great story and I definitely recommend!

I have really been enjoying this series, and in this book, we get Cal's story, he is the younger brother of the McConnell boys. He happens to meet up with an undercover U.S. Marshall, Maggie Davis. Only he doesn't know she is a Marshall. She keeps it from him and so does those who know as they are trying to find out who is the insider giving the stagecoach robbers intel on the gold and money shipments.

Maggie has been hurt by unscrupulous men in the past, so her guard is up when it comes to Cal and his smooth-talking ways. However, the more she gets to know him, the more she falls for him despite what she has promised herself.

Danger and romance collide in this fun western tale of true love and high stakes. I enjoyed Maggie and Cal's romance and that ending was icing on the cake.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

Christian Historical Romance is a favorite genre that I enjoy. Maggie and the Maverick by Erica Vetsch is part of The Brides of the West series. Erica Vetsch is a favorite author for Christian Historical Fiction.

WOW, what an AMAZING storyline, I was hooked immediately. The setting is Idaho. The 2 main characters are Maggie Davis and Cal McConnell. Maggie is a US Marshall and Cal is a Stagecoach Driver. Maggie has trust issues with Men and is still wary of Cal, when she meets him. Cal sees Maggie from afar and instantly is attracted to her. US Marshall, Maggie Davis is in town to investigate robberies and a murder. Cal knows that he has a past reputation and he has worked through many of those issues and changed his ways. I really LOVE how Maggie and Cal learn to trust one another and work together to solve the mysteries in town. The storyline is one of the best in this series. The book is about letting go of the Past, Trust in others and LOVE I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Romance. WONDERFUL BOOK!

I didn't think this would be my favorite book out of the 3 books in the series but it was! I didn't really like Maggie's character until about midway through the book and then I fell in love with her! She tried so hard to push everyone away due to her past and what had happened to her but Cal just wouldn't let her do that to him! I loved Cal from the beginning! His personality was great! Even though he had the same past as his brothers (with the alcoholic father, some time spent in jail occasionally for petty theft and death of his mom), he still chose to be a happy guy and treat people well. I liked how he cared about people and did nice things for them.
It was great to get resolution for the things that had begun in the first book and lingered throughout the series. There was action, danger and romance! My kind of story! I loved the character development in this story and revisiting the other characters from previous books. It was a satisfying ending to the series.

This is a reprint of a Barbour Publishing novel from 2010 by the same name. Now the book is part of Wild Heart Books’ series Brides of the West.

This book continues the plot threads started in Clara and the Cowboy and continued in Lily and the Lawman having to do with the gang of thieves who have been plaguing the area. It is another book with more violence than I enjoy reading. The misunderstandings due to secrets and past hurts, and the havoc wrought as justice is served and things are resolved left me kind of worn out.

I’ve read other of Vetsch’s western novels that I enjoyed more.

Maggie and the Maverick: Brides of the West, Book 6 by Erica Vetsch completes the three McConnell’s brothers’ stories. Cal McConnell is the wilder but most charming of the brothers. Now he has straightened up, trying to live for God while doing what is right. Still this fun-loving man would make a lady US Marshal nervous, even one working uncover. Cal shows a tender side but also a determination side too. U.S. Marshal Maggie Davis was a joy to get to know. How wonderful to have a great tale where the woman has a major career in a man’s field. She is intelligent, resourceful, observant and is a credit to the US Marshals.

The right conclusion to this historical series featuring the McConnell brothers. You can read just one once you meet the men. You will want to meet them all seeing how God works in their lives.

Cal McConnell is a charmer, but never means to be a heart breaker. As stage driver, he meets all kinds of people, but the one that sticks in his heart is Maggie Davis. Only problem, she is hiding something and flatly refuses to trust him.

Someone is out to get Cal - after all, the stage robberies seem to always happen when he is the driver - or is he the one letting the outlaws know when to rob the stage? Sheriff Powers seems to think so. Who is right and will trust finally win the day for Maggie and Cal?

A fast pace western adventure with Cal McConnell as a stage coach driver now instead of being on the ranch. His introduction to Maggie Davis on his stage coach was not what he expected. The layers of ups and downs flowed easily with Cal being a man of God, humorous at times and taking care of his father. Maggie still had her suspicion about his involvement with crimes. The McConnell brothers sure looked out for each other. but who are the shady characters ready to frame Cal?

I totally loved this series about the three McConnell brothers as they live out their Christian faith and try to overcome the prejudice against them because of their past. I especially enjoyed the wonderful banter and friendship between the brothers. It might be a bit unrealistic how quickly the characters fall in love, but still an enjoyable story. This is the first book in the trilogy. Be sure to read "Clara and the Cowboy" and "Lily and the Lawman" first.

The bloom of sweet romance buds like a wildflower in Erica Vetsch’s novel, Maggie and the Maverick. As delightful as the love story is, the mystery of robberies consistently interfering with the stagecoach runs adds just the right amount of suspense to keep this story interesting. With colorful colloquialisms, Vetsch takes her readers straight into life in the Idaho Territory before it became a state. Her descriptions and cowboy dialogue add rustic charm to the narrative.

Following the youngest of the McConell brothers from the first two books in the series, this one gives Cal, the handsome rogue, his chance to meet his match in Maggie Davis. Spunk, grit, and small-town vibes shimmer through the chapters. The characters from previous books in the series add to the layered plot that intricately weaves the prior mysteries with the current one, keeping you guessing who is involved. I found the necessary secrets added angst to the fast-fall romance and gave the book a colorful tension.

A quick read with spiritual nuggets tucked into the pages, this is one historical romance that will surely please. It had me guessing until the end. The strong finish was perfect for the book and the series.

What I Think You Should Know:
Maggie and the Maverick is part of the Brides of the West series and is the third book in the Brides of Money Creek series. Set in the Idaho Territory in June of 1884 this book features US Marshal Maggie Davis and Cal McConnell. While this book can be a stand alone I recommend that the reader read at least two books in the series (Clara and the Cowboy and Lily and the Lawman) prior to starting this book as it would make this more enjoyable.

What I think about this book:
Maggie starts off so prickly, but the reader quickly learns that there is more to the story. Money Creek is being plagued by bandits who are robbing the stage and getting away with it. Maggie is undercover as a saleswoman, but takes an instant dislike to Cal. Cal is a Christian, but some people in the town will never forget his past. When the stage robberies intensify and a murder happens Maggie starts to question her judgement. I really enjoyed this story. Maggie's past has caused her to be wary and Cal’s past keeps being thrown in his face. The author gave us captivating characters and an intriguing mystery that kept me turning the page to see what happened next. I will definitely read more in the Brides of the West.

This is part of the Brides of the West series and also book three in the Brides of Money Creek. I was so happy to read Cal’s story after meeting him in the previous two books about his brothers. With his swoon worthy roguish smile will he ever let anyone capture his heart as he drives stage. Enter a lady marshal who is trying to help solve the mystery of who is behind the stage robberies and her suitcase that has you laughing at the beginning. A story of having enough faith to trust again not just others but your own judgement. I love the characters whispered prayers and the sense of family is represented even in showing compassion for an alcoholic father. An enjoyable read that leaves you saying more please as even the secondary characters capture your heart. A quick read that flows from the pages and becomes family.
