meh

Sawyer’s book, “ the code of love” remains a favorite so I wanted to read this for a long time. Alas, the three characters were uninspired and their motives seemed murky throughout the entire book. The heroine is alternatively heartbroken over her dead husband, scheming to find out how he died, and panting after Decrcey, one of the other lead characters. What’s to like? Not much. The two other main characters, a Frenchman Dercrey, and an Englishman were murky and so shrouded in secrecy for much of the story that they were bland; I soon reached the point where I didn’t care about their motivations. When the final plot twist was revealed and true motivations made clear, it was too late. I just didn’t care.

The ending just leaves you hanging...it needs a better ending. It's like a cliffhanger. You Re not the copywriter that does this. It's frustrating to me. We readers Like a happy.ending!☺

The Chase is the second of a two part set about the Napoleonic War. The first volume concerns a secret code (the grand cypher) used by Napoleon and involves the conflicted love story between a British secret agent and a French woman. This story this time juxtaposes a Frenchman and an English widow whose husband was a British spy. It's long, but interesting, beginning in February 1815 with the Corn Law Riots, and moving on to the Hundred Days and ending with the Battle of Waterloo. The Prince Regent plays a significant role, but the main pivot of the storyline is a cabal pledged to the assassination of Napoleon. The writing is lush, the hero and heroine appealing, and the action is non-stop.
