A longtime Aspen Institute Moderator, O'Toole presents a concise "explanation" or mapping of the Institute's classic Executive Seminar, in which a small group of leaders comes together to discuss key readings in political, economic, and moral philosophy (from Plato and Aristotle through Locke, Hobbes, and Rousseau, to Marx and Friedman) in order to understand the values that make up a good society and how leaders must navigate those values and the needs of their followers. This book effectively represents O'Toole's approach to "values-based leadership." I am a student of O'Toole's and a fellow Moderator, and this is a great book, but it cannot possibly and should not replace the experience of attending the Aspen Seminar.

O'Toole offers a clear path for families to manage fairness, equality, justice and merit. Families starting to eal with issues of governance would do well to begin with this book. The competing needs and claims of siblings and cousins all too often lead to litigation, though written to describe competing claims in companies, this book offers an alternative to managing conflict in families. My go to book for family governance.

Reading for my masters, the book give great examples and is very easy to read and understand.
