Boris is Russia’s greatest historical opera. Mussorgsky’s libretto adds a populist note to Pushkin’s themes. The accompanying essays are helpful.

Reading libretto while watching metopera.org's Nightly Met Opera Stream: Bass René Pape gives a remarkable performance in the title role of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. The Saturday, October 23, 2010 Live in HD transmission features a cast of hundreds, led by mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk as Marina, tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko as Grigory, bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin as Rangoni, and bass Mikhail Petrenko as Pimen. Valery Gergiev conducts Stephen Wasdsworth’s sweeping production, available tonight, October 30, 2020 beginning at 7:30PM ET until tomorrow, October 31, at 6:30PM ET.

[I realize this is not a proper review, but there is not enough room in Goodreads notes sections to track the details which production I am reading along with; my apologies.]
