Καλύπτει όλα τα ρεύματα από τον Ρομαντισμό ως το Μεταμοντέρνο, με τρόπο κατατοπιστικό. Σε σημεία ο λόγος εκ των πραγμάτων γίνεται πυκνός, αφού ο συγγραφέας καλείται να συμπεριλάβει όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερα σε περιορισμένο χώρο. Λειτουργεί άψογα ως βιβλίο αναφοράς, στο οποίο κάποιος επιστρέφει για να διασαφηνίσει επιμέρους στοιχεία ή να επεκτείνει τις γνώσεις του.
