Mike McPhail is the award winning Author and Anthologist of the military science fiction series Defending The Future, published by Dark Quest Books, and editor of the publisher's DTF Publications imprint. He is a member of the Military Writers Society of America (MWSA), and the creator of the Alliance Archives (All'Arc) series and its related Martial Role-Playing Game (MRPG), a manual-based, percentile system, that realistically portrays the consequences of warfare.
Born into a military / engineering family, his lifelong dream was to join NASA and become a mission specialist; to that end, he attended the Academy of Aeronautics in New York, as well as enlisting in the Air National Guard. While working towards his goal, a sudden illness brought a halt to these dreams.
After recovering, he came to grips with his new reality; so he chose to put his hard-earned technical skills and imagination to use as a graphic artist, writer/editor and game designer.
I am very proud to have been involved in producing this books. It is full of fabulous stories by some pretty kick-ass authors. I don't think I'd be wrong in saying that this is the best book in the series to date.
This was an excellent book. Each piece was a thoroughly interesting look at different aspects of war, as well as the things that could happen in our future. I enjoyed reading it.
Full disclosure: I have a story in this collection, "Falling to Eternity." Nonetheless, after reading all the stories in the book, I was struck by the unique perspectives lent by the authors to the military SF genre. David Weber in his intro also talked about a "unique perspective" lent by the fact that every author in the collection is a woman, but noted that every one of us managed to avoid the "blow 'em up" big bangs that Hollywood so loves when it comes to stories set in space. Still, not one of these stories is "mushy" or touchy-feely or a looove story as many men admit they expect from women writers--and thus avoid like a case of Martian itch. These are stories about people, not all of them women, but certainly informed by the fact that women focus on different things than men. And they are all part of the human experience. Without both genders, none of us would be here, so why discount a different view of the same events?
I would hope that most readers are gender-blind, willing to look at good writing by anyone. In that regard, they won't be disappointed by No Man's Land.
At first I didn`t get the title, but know I really liked it dopple. Since its a book about war, about the No Man`s Land where no men roames ... but strong women can.
I recomandate every book in this series, and this is no exception.
