Paul Kater was born in the Netherlands in 1960. He quickly developed a feel for languages but did not pursue a career in those as his native language, Dutch, did not offer many options in that time.

After learning far too much about computers he started to make a living with them. During all that time he always wrote short stories, little things to entertain family and friends and also himself with.

Since 2003 he's been writing more seriously, first posting his scribblings on an amateur writer's mailing list, and then publishing shorter and longer stories on the internet. Due to the international character of the Internet, all Paul's stories so far are written in English. The best known books he wrote are the Hilda the Wicked Witch series.

Paul currently lives in Cuijk, in the Netherlands, with his books and the many characters he's developed in the past years, who claim he is a figment of their imagination.

Currently the last in the series and I wish there were a few more. At last check all the books in this series were still free in Amazon store and I can't recommend them enough. This one developed further a few characters we were familiar with from previous books, but hadn't really gotten to know well yet. The story has the same high level of fun found in the previous books, and the minor language errors are even more minor this time around. The author has obviously grown more confident with his english throughout writing this and the few mistakes I found in this book could easily have been made by a native english speaker or even a typo with bad autocorrect fixing it.

All of this series gets the same review, because they are equally very fun reads, like cotton candy or a fluff blanket. A few niggles concern the translation: one issue is the use of "snip" for the snapping of fingers. However, even this quirk is endearing. Hilda is an absolutely marvelous character. I would love to be part of her circle!! Both William and the house are excellent supporting characters. Gotta love a sentient house. Loved this series so completely; I own 13 of them. The stories pull from fairy tales in completely innovative and unique ways. I highly recommend.

Wonderful spin on witchy tales

I have followed all Paul Kater's books and loved every one. This blend of humor and how a "wicked witch" should behave in the pursuit of taking care of people and things takes the old tales and turns them inside out in the very best way. Do yourself favor and pick one or four of these books and settle in for a happy time reading.

Feline follies.

Author freebie. Suitable for teens and adults. The witches go to help snow white deal with treason and wild animal attacks. A variety of felines move thru the narrative.

Right away in the first chapter, a section is repeated word for word, doubling the chapter's size. Not a good way to start a story (unless it is like the movie "Groundhog Day," which it doesn't seem to be, since that repeat occurance didn't happen elsewhere i nthe story....) In this point in the series, I have gotten use to many things about Hilda. She has grown and become more balanced in many ways due to William's appearance. But it still grates on me in how she (and Baba Yaga,) is so biased on other witches, and how she sterotypes other witches that she sees "below" her. In my opinion, that's unfortunate. I did NOT enjoy that humor at all in this book, especially in the beginning, (it felt written heavy-handed,) and in fact, it's getting tiring to read the series when she belittles others that have special talents that are not her specialty. At least, that's how the book started out.

But in the end, the flower witch, Esmee, threw a few curve balls her and Baba Yaga's way and all turned out all right. In fact, as I started reading this book, I thought: even though I have two more books in this series to read, I may not finish this series if I run across that arrogant attitude again: it really turned me off. I really liked Baba Yaga in the first three books, but in this one she starts out just plain mean. But then, Esmee, and Baba Yaga's relationship took a unexected (and absolutely fabulous) turn and Esmee's wonderful flower personality blended into this new witch, and I started to really like her, and suddenly: this book that started out two stars grew to three: then grew to four!

This book read fast and was the perfect number of pages for a read-through in one day. This story regrounded me in the original theme of the series, and made me fall in love with the characters, both old and new, all over again. Thank-you for restoring my faith in this series with that awesome ending!

[Note: along with the repeating section in chapter one, there were minor grammatical error and typos throughout the book. However, the dialog is getting cleaner, and therefore it is not as offputting as in the past.]

I really enjoyed this one. I enjoyed the adventures of the cats as well as the witches. It added a new twist to the cats. Good book.

Series continues to please. This one had a bit more gravitas: more ambiguity, a more menacing villain, fewer comedic scenes -- and more satisfying for that.

Another installation from Paul Kater in his Hilda series. I didn't find this one quite as exciting as some of the ones before, but the humor is still there. That is all I need to enjoy these books.

I obviously needed to read the first four books in this series, because I was totally lost right off the bat. And didn't seem to want to find out why; not that interested.

I am dead keen on this series and Hilda - Cats in no way falls below the standard expected. A terrific fun read, and anyone who enjoys Pratchett's Discworld series is bound to love it.
