The Woman's Handbook of Healing Herbs: A Guide to Natural Remedies

Rate this book
More than just a how-to book, this is a handbook of empowerment and knowledge that every woman should own. Whether you are new to herbs or a seasoned gatherer, use this book to increase your connection with nature and your soul.

Herbs have a long history of being used for medicinal purposes around the world. But they are more than just health aides—using herbs nourishes a relationship with the earth as well as with one’s own body. In addition to outlining practical guidelines for planting and harvesting, this book addresses healing completely in emotional and psychological form, with a specific emphasis on each woman’s spiritual journey.

Understanding and using herbs is both an art and a science. By selecting herbs that address the needs of the whole person, not just specific symptoms, you can restore the balance and harmony of your physical and mental health. Chapters

Deb Soule provides instructions for practical day-to-day remedies, including salves, tinctures, and teas, and advice for learning how to start an organic garden, gather your herbs and flowers, and prepare them. If you do not want or are unable to grow your own plants, there is a resource list for sources of high-quality organic and wild-harvested herbs.

I would have liked this book better if it were less wiccan/new age/neo-pagan/goddess worship heavy. I fully believe in the healing potential of herbs, but it was hard to get into this book that suggested taking these herbs after lighting a candle and praying to my ancestors.

Deb Sole has a beautiful connection with nature. She begins her book with a little history in the use of herbs, which I found very enlightening. The recipes use easy to obtain herbs (wild or cultivated). She teaches the beginner how to make salves, tinctures, & teas and how/why they are used. She elaborates on how to properly dry different types of herbs (in case we thought hanging them upside down to air dry was the only method) *smile* I was surprised to find a very detailed description of how to make and use castor oil packs (as often recommended by Edgar Cayce), this is something everyone should learn. I once used a castor oil pack to cure a ganglion cyst on my wrist in just a few nights. She covers all my favorite herbs plus more. Whether you are new to herbs or a seasoned gatherer, there is something in this book for everyone. I have this book in kindle edition, but would also like to have it in soft cover. It would make an excellent gift. Having this book is like having a grandparent to pass on the information. I felt like I was walking thru the meadow with her. Lest someone complain there are not enough photos, anyone serious in the use of wild herbs should invest in a good botanical guide which will go into detail regarding the physical appearance, flowering habit, region, soil type, and location (sun or shade). I would vote this book a "must have" for any novice or vetran herbalist.

Though a little bit on the---hate to say it-- crunchy side, this is a great little reference for women, especially concerning hormone balancing. This is a guide written by a woman with an expertise knowledge of herbs and more importantly, their practical use (especially in blends). Though mostly directed towards women, there are recipes that focus on immune enhancing and more that don't specifically pertain to any gender. All in all a good reference.

I highly recommend this book for people who are interested in understanding more about the intricacies of woman health issues as they relate to the spiritual and natural world. I found that while reading, I took many moments to reflect on the joys of being female:)

Deb Soule's herb book spills empathy and nurturing support for women. This is the first herb book I ever owned.
