Nickols, quilt and fabric historian
I'm a sucker for antique quilts. This book lays out a nice Michigan-based collection of nineteenth century quilts owned by the Henry Ford museum. Even better, some clear, detailed patterns are provided to help you reproduce a number of the most eye-catching artworks. I appreciated the little chunks of history provided about some of the incredible artists/ mothers/ farm-wives whose quilts are on display and consider this a good book for the historically-minded quilter or anyone interested in the history of domestic arts and textiles.
If you like quilts or like to quilt you will enjoy this book as much as I did. A unique feature is the Century of Quilting Genius featuring the stories and information of quilts and culture beginning in 1825, beginning with the quilts of Susan McCord, a farmwife from Indiana. Information continues thru 1925 with quilting memories, and how technology changed the process of quilting. The pictures are amazing and quilt patterns and directions are included. Red and white quilts and log cabin quilts are two more sections giving history and patterns of quintessentially American patterns. Appliqué and patchwork quilting is also presented. If you are a quilter, or just learning, this book is a great reference.
Love this book- true inspiration for quilters- especially historically accurate colors and patterns with directions that make sense. And I have visited the Henry Ford Museum and have viewed these quilts!
This book features the twelve Susan McCord quilts owned the Henry Ford Museum with patterns for her vine quilt and one of her urn quilts. Best of all, there is an extensive history of McCord's life. Addition quilts from the Henry Ford are featured. A first rate reference and pattern book.
loved looking at these quilts in the book and most likely have seen them in person. my family have had a membership to the henry ford (thehenryford.org) museum in the past and we could spend hours each day just looking around at everything but loved the greenfield village best!!
This had a LOT of interesting history about the resourcefulness, creativity, and evolution of quiltmaking as well as actual patterns/plans to create some of the historical quilts. My favorite part was reading about the creativity of 19th century quilter Susan McCord (amazing quilts!).
