Convoluted, and yet boring — I’m so glad to finally have finished these novels! They’ve been a great disappointment.

My principle criticism of this one is that, like in her other books, Emerson puts the focus on Gabrielle. The story is really told from Gabrielle’s point of view and there is precious little Xena. The series is called XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS. To be sure, Gabrielle has a large part to play but I would have preferred these stories to be written from Xena’s point of view.

Further, Emerson writes Gabrielle as if she’s stuck in early season one. She’s annoying and naive. The events of The Rift are mentioned a few times but they don’t seem to have had a big impact on Gabrielle.

A little bit better than the previous too books, not because Emerson suddenly became a better author or anything. Purely because things actually started happening.
