For a century, Dracula, the Superman of Evil, has ruled from his secret lair in the High Sierra. But now, confronting a world intent on scouring the shadows from his haunted world, the Vampire King restores life to a dying woman and ensnares her in a ruthless struggle with greedy developers over the future of his mountain kingdom.
A delightfully weird tale of a vampire in CA’s Sierra Mountains and its fight against land developers. After a bit of time getting the characters straight, the story took hold and kept me glued until the end.
Trying to avoid spoilers, I’ll just say that Bram Stoker got Dracula’s end all wrong. You’ll find out what really happened to him in this story set in California’s Sierra Nevada. Burchfield has done an excellent job of disguising the true story line, so surprises keep coming throughout the narrative. And the ending is, well, enigmatically intriguing. For the more faint of heart, I would not recommend reading this at bedtime. Nothing sadistic or anything like that, but the images and imaginations that Burchman conjures up stay with you perhaps longer than you might like. All in all, Dragon’s Ark is a great read. Highly recommended.
