Set in the hills of North Carolina, this dramatic story of the powerful ties that bind men and women follows young James Tally as he tries to cope with his parents' painful separation by pitting himself against the forces of nature
I've read all of Yount's books to date, and it seems each is better than the previous. Thief of Dreams is my favorite. The characters and their lives are described in a way that makes them fully human. This is a novel that is in every way as honest, authentic, and real as fiction can be. Yount is one of America's best novelists.
One of the best books I've ever read. Set in Appalachia in the 1940s, the book remains true to its setting and characters, and creates a fine portrait of a boy who is seeking a masculine role model.
