Very nice introduction to netsuke carving, with decent descriptions of the tools and techniques needed. An ample number of detailed carving examples are given, at various levels of difficulty. In addition, the color netsuke photos are beautiful. The next best thing to holding these tiny wood and ivory jewels in your hands. Yeah, right. The book is worth looking into.

Read this book to help with an assignment I'd worked on. I wanted to get an idea of how netsukes were made and the thoughts and processes behind them. Things such as what medium to use suitable to the design etc...

The intended purpose of the book is to teach carving. Unfortunately, I've not attempted my own netsuke but I would suggest the book is easy to follow, although it would harder for me to comment further. For what I needed, however, the book was certainly useful and recommended for observational studies.

i was lulled into a false sense of talent reading this lovely little how to guide, i saw the step by step photos and thought well of course i could do that, luckily for my nubbins i awoke from this fevered dream long before i lost any blood, skin or bone in the attempted creation of these beauties

Clear, concise, very well-illustrated guide to tools, materials, and techniques for carving in wood, ivory, tagua, and to a lesser extent, horn and stone.
