I live in Austin and have a made a few dozen trips to San Antonio over the years. For the most recent adventure I thought I'd check out a guide book and see if I was missing anything.
This travel guide gives a good overall view to the area, which is includes, Austin, San Antonio, and even the surrounding Hill Country. A good introduction and not a lot of detail for any given area.
I thought it was odd that the hotel suggestions didn't provide any price range (they were on the high end). I found the restaurant information useful as except for the local standards, that's a business that tends to change a lot.
Some years back our trip to San Antonio was cut short after four days because of a family emergency. When Covid is no longer a threat, we plan to return to finish our SA Itinerary, visit the Hill Country, and explore Austin. Unfortunately, this book was pretty basic and not as much help as some guidebooks.
so, as someone who has been to the hill country several times I thought it'd read this to find some interesting things to do I didn't know about. the book is well organized, easy to read, and includes decent points of interest. in general I was disappointed, the hill country is pretty much as boring as I thought. the interesting points I didn't know about were, the missions from the 1700s in san antonio and the lavender fields south west of Austin. other than that I didn't feel I found out anything I couldn't have found online. I'm glad I got the book from the library, and didn't buy it.
This book came in for me after I had already returned from my trip to Austin and San Antonio, but I read it anyway and want to note that it's a keeper! Must remember it when I plan my next trip there, which I plan to do with some native Texans who can explore the Hill Country and beyond with me.
