Witches blurring the lines of good & evil, soul crushing betrayal, all roads point to murder!
Losing her mother at a young age, sixteen-year-old Claudette is burdened with depression, haunted by the memories of her mother's untimely death.
Unknowing of her fate, secrets come to light when her seventeenth birthday approaches, nothing is as it seems. With her father marrying an evil woman, gifting her two equally vile step sisters, Claudette's world is upended when he accepts a job in a new town steeped in mystery, magic, and darkness.
Mashalville is anything but normal.
Settling into her new surroundings it’s not long before she realizes the real significance of turning seventeen.
Forced into making a decision that will change her life forever, there’s only one question she has to answer.
Will she keep her newfound magic or hold on to the normalcy of her past?
I absolutely loved my first reading of Seventeen: Magic Is Real. On the surface, Claudette seems like just your average new girl in an average high school setting, but soon becomes clear that neither are average. Claudette has lost her mother, and her resulting depression and suicidality colors so much if her decision making throughout this fairytale-like story. And Mashalville is no cheery welcoming small town -- everything from the family Claudette's father chooses for them, to the focus of the town's youth, reminded me of fairytales' dark undercoats.
Claudette reached right into my heart and set up her sparkly, magical bedroom. Watching the other characters and story elements push and pull her was so intense! When she comes into her own personal power and starts pushing and pulling back, exerting her own will on the story and characters, the book grew even more exciting. In this character trajectory, McMillian beautifully expresses a story of a girl's grief, and her struggle to show herself and the world that she exists despite the hole right through the middle of her.
This book ends on a cliffhanger, which I don't usually enjoy, but McMillian does the audience a boon by first addressing the main story conflict. She gives us a wonderful showdown, and then leaps directly off of that into the conflict for the second book, it is such good storytelling! I'm looking forward to the next installment of the series.
McMillian provides trigger warnings at the outset of her book, be sure to read them! My trigger warnings here are for death of family, grief and bereavement, possible SA, suicide, and bullying.
Like fairytales, this book pulls you in with both sparkles and shifting shadows. Such an entertaining and thrilling read!

This was a short little whimsical tale of magic and witches, hidden in a new town where Claudette has just moved with her father and despised stepmum and stepsisters. She is about to turn 17 when secret things are due to happen to her.
Not sure why I picked this one up, probably on special and sounded interesting. Part of a series, that I had not realised when I started and not written yet. Not bad, not great. 3.5 stars for moderate interest but not great presentation or believablility.

Seventeen, Magic is real is an interesting novella about a girl whose world changes entirely the months leading up to her 17th birthday. On her 17th birthday, she will be faced with making a life altering choice.
The narration style of this book is unique and not one you see often. To me, it read kind of like a diary or documentary where the MC occasionally addresses the reader directly. I thought jt worked very well for the story, which was fast-paced and ended on a cliffhanger. I am looking forward to book 2 of this series to see if I picked the right team.
This book has triggers, which include depression, colorism, suicide, murder, physical bullying.
The author has created such an enchanting and perilous world with secrets, magic, invigorating mystery and buried truths. Some characters are mean and have hidden intentions while some are kind and clever. It’s a dark fantasy with magic and murder mystery embedded in it .
Imagine a school of good and evil. Characters with hidden intentions and a world which has put Earth witches lives at stake. Claudette is a protagonist of the story and as her parents concealed some secrets from her. After the demise of her mother, when her stepmother and stepsisters arrives, her world gets upside down and buried secrets along with prophecy begin to unveil. It was predetermined that she will receive either a gift or a curse on her seventeenth birthday but will it come with perils too?
Tangled in the web of magic, deception, buried secrets, conspiracy, treachery and murder mystery, will she find her way out of them?
The story starts with a focus on the main character Claudette, who is struggling with coming to terms about moving to a new town and school away from her best friends. love how it starts as a 'normal high school story with a relatable and loveable character. It's also written in first person, from her point of view, which really draws you into the story as a reader too, so her thoughts and feelings are really emphasised. So, under duress, the move takes place and things look up for Claudette when a handsome and very friendly ' mentor' becomes smitten with her, however Masahallville is no ordinary town - everyone at school seems obsessed with when Claudette turns seventeen but won't tell her why .. There are so many important and relatable themes throughout the story that are written both sensitively and perfectly in the story- loss of a parent, mental health struggles with this and a previous attempted suicide. Bullying and racism, friendships and young love/ lust into a first sexual relationship. The emotions running throughout the story, combined with interesting and relatable characters and plot twists , keep you turning the page for more. Finally, as I said - this is no ordinary town - there is magic, unique and realistic magic, which leaves the story at a perfect cliffhanger for part 2 - which I need and can't wait to read!! This is the second book I have read and loved by this author - and wow! I am truly a fan! You seriously need to read this!
Release date of this YA fantasy gem of a book is 23rd of May 2023 - pre-orders available via Amazon now!

First to note I feel honoured to have received an ARC copy of Seventeen, so Thankyou to this amazing author for letting me get a sneak peak. Fingers crossed I get picked to ARC read part 2 because that ending has left me with so many juicy questions. I am in need of K.C McMillian ‘s brand of magic and quick. (Nudge nudge)
This beautiful story is fast paced and has a plethora of unique characters and a brilliant plot that keeps you second guessing yourself. If you’re a fan of ⭐️magic ⭐️fated lovers ⭐️murder mystery ⭐️fantasy ⭐️betrayal ⭐️or diversity to name just a few then this is the book for you
I’m a sucker for a enthralling murder mystery and this did not disappoint. Check your TW’s as this book delves into some hard hitting topics for some, glad to say this author has approached and executed them with style and Grace.
Loved the first book I read by this author (Bright) and so happy to see she is going leaps and bounds to hone her skills, she’s knocked this one out of the park. Roll on Part Two.
Holy fluffery baby fluffs! Think Cinderella modern-day dark twist, but with magic & witches. This was one of the most fun and enjoyable novella's I've read in a long time. Even with it being outside my normal genre's to read, when I found out the synopsis I had to give it a try and I was not disappointed! Fast-paced, compelling, funny, dark & twisted. A great fantasy novella you'll want to sink your teeth into like your favourite candy! An absolute delight that has a perfect weave of every genre you could want. Even though it's fantasy, it's still relatable, relevant & devishly fun! You'll be swept away with this novella of an enticing plot.
Thank you to K. C. McMillian herself for this ARC. Release Date: Out Today!
Seventeen Magic is Real, is an amazing page turner!! I just really enjoyed this story about Claudette and how she is learning how to deal with so many changes in her sixteen year old life. Claudette turns seventeen and things start taking a weird magical turn. Seventeen has everything from a love triangle, magical powers, murder mystery and evil step sisters!
KC McMillian does an amazing job talking about mental health and the importance of counseling! It was very empowering, and perfect. Claudette’s character was written so well, I absolutely adored her!!
I can NOT wait for the second book! I seriously did not want to put this story down!! I read it every chance I got! Make sure you get a copy, you don’t want to miss this great read!!
⚠️Trigger Warnings Bullying Attempted Suicide Racism Death of Parents
♥️Tropes Magic Good, Evil Witches Fantasy Murder Mystery A Secret Town Fated Lovers
Seventeen is a really interesting YA fantasy book that reminds me of a culturally diverse remaking of Cinderella & Harry Potter blended together. The story tackles many important issues for teens like bullying, depression, racism, sex, struggling with romantic relationships & parental dynamics, as well as the pain of losing a parent. I think all these issues are so key for adolescents to see & understand they aren't alone in these struggles. I can see how important addressing these matters was to the author in crafting this story. I applaud her for the passion & care she put into it.
The story itself revolves around the FMC dealing with having to adjust to a new school & life with her father's new bride, the classic wicked stepmother & new stepsisters. She soon discovers many things about her town aren't what they seem. She also quickly becomes squarely divided between the interest of two rival guys, both seemingly with secret agendas & both disliking their competition! This story is bound to intrigue you wondering who is telling the truth & discovering what all the secret mysteries of this town really are.
Grading this story is very hard because it's only a short novella. Many things I feel needed explained in more depth & certain elements of the town & characters I felt needed to be highlighted a little stronger. I'll wait until I get the chance to read her entire vision before grading it, but I have faith that once the story is fully told, I'll understand her decisions. I did feel the story walked a shaky line between being YA or NA. Some of the situations didn't feel accurate to how 16- or 17-year-old students would be, but I will again trust in time these decisions will make sense in the full scope of the story. I really enjoyed the characters & I look forward to getting to know all of them & the magical history of the town as this series continues. Great intro into your series, KC! 👏
Where to start theres so much to love wrapped up in one package claudette is hilarious, resilient and kind 😍I really root for her as a character you cant help but love her! The first person POV reads a bit like a diary and it feels very personal to be reading which further strengthens the relatability to her and the story it really pulls you in. The Themes are strong and brilliantly done. This story is so full of emotion and tension I was hooked and reluctant for it to end. bullying, racism, loss of a parent, attempted suicide . these themes were all crucial to the story and were so well written. Her mental health struggles made her character all the more interesting.
Another kind of tension is the love interests, eek 😍 no spoilers from me 🤐 The plot twists really got me thinking especially as the book gos on you dont know who to trust and what to think 🧐 it will keep you guessing.
The magic and the world that’s been created here is brilliant and unique. its exciting to watch it all unravel and get more glimpses into the witches. It feels pretty real too! I picked this up because I adore witches I love the fresh take on them . again my lips are sealed 🤐
I cant wait to see what my girl Claudette does next!
Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of her book! It'll be released on the 23rd of May 2023
This was an intense, fast paced read that kept me guessing right throughout the book (and even now after finishing it lol)
The world & characters the author has created are unique & exciting! I loved learning about Mashalville & the people who live there (shh) The tension towards the end was killinggg me & the plot twists were well written, they completely threw me off guard!
Claudette is the main character of this book & it follows her life as a teenager. The first person POV made it feel almost like a diary & in my opinion strengthened Claudette's character as well as the story. I think I'm team Eli, but honestly, I dont know who to trust 🤣
I also loved how along with fantasy there was also some mystery elements in there!
I would say that before reading you check the TWS & there is also some mature themes.
Very interesting spin on magic! I’ll start by saying I don’t read much YA these days because it’s difficult not to see my own kids in this genre, but there’s always room for exceptions! SEVENTEEN was EXCEPTIONAL!
This is my first book by this author and I was blown away at the detailed magic system narrated in the book. I loved how Claudette came into her own as the magic was introduced. The romantic elements were a nice touch but it was the magic that blew me away.
Claudette goes through a lot of ups and downs, with tragedy knocking at her door, but she is not without hope. She is tenacious and taps into her magic to pull her through. I think it’s what I enjoyed the most.
While I won’t say I’ll be exploring more YA, I will be adding KC on my auto buy list. 🖤
I’m looking forward to what happens next in Earth.
I'm going to be honest, I was a bit iffy about the start of this book. but I kept reading and I'm glad I did! I found myself absolutely enveloped in the story. The characters are built well, I usually have a good sense of enemy but not here! I'm feeling exactly like Claudette (the main girl), which is confused and strucken! The plot is very interesting once you start to understand it. I'm conflicted about my feelings towards a lot characters, but in a good way. at first I loved them but the author really builds the suspense! I do know that I love Eli 100% ! If you love magic themed books, read this! Get past the beginning and the real magic fun will begin! :))
Seventeen: Magic is Real is the first part of a YA Fantasy series with mostly Single POV and ends with cliffhanger.
Thank you Hazels Book Tours and KC McMillan for the ARC. I received a copy of this book in exchange for a read and review.
I very much enjoyed part 1 of this series, and I look forward to reading more when Part 2 is eventually released. There is a lot going on in this book, from Magic, to murder, to secrets, to love triangles, and more. While I did enjoy it, it was a lot for a novella. For me it could have been another 50 - 100 pages and had Dual POV, or more background and information on the world.
I was left with a lot of questions. Which is the point of a cliffhanger and it being part of a series. I am just impatient. 😅
That being said, it was action packed, and I loved all of the different angles in the book. It was a great coming of age story where the Main Character had a lot of growth and obstacles to be where she ended. The sensitive topics were covered with tact and I felt like the trigger warnings were accurate and prepared me for what was to come. I really liked the characters that were likable and did not like the characters that I felt were not supposed to be likable. Overall, I really enjoyed the story.
This was a great quick read novella filled with magic and intrigue and romance perfect for the modern YA community - but please do take not of the trigger warnings.
I loved Claudette. Having felt like an outcast in her old school, with just a few close friends and being picked on by her step-sisters too, it was really refreshing that when she moves to a new school, she gradually gains a group of friends around her who take care of each other and stand up to the bullies.
The relationships she's forming make a stark contrast to those she had before and I thought this was really well written. It focusses well on overlooking differences and standing up to those who are unkind, but also that while standing up for yourself, to remember to be kind to others too.
I was completely drawn in by the mystery surrounding the importance of becoming seventeen, especially as nobody would talk about it until the time and I loved that Claudette had Eli around to chat to about things. I was also very intrigued for a while about the strange town location and the school system with the secretive West Wing.
As the story progresses further, things don't seem to add up and it's hard to know who to trust and who not to. Claudette starts to hone her powers and her tragedy makes her question everything she knows.
I definitely spent a while forming scenarios and felt this really had a Beautiful Creatures vibe (which I adored)
There is quite a lot of mention about suicide, bullying, teen sex and traumatic deaths - so do be careful if any of these topics trigger you.
I found these really sensitively presented and think it's important that it's seen to be ok to discuss such topics openly.
I really enjoyed this and as we are left with a huge cliffhanger, I can't wait to grab book 2 and get some answers and see how Claudette manages to work things out.
Seventeen Magic Is Real Part 1 is a unique, imaginative, relatable, exciting, mysterious, dark, and captivating story! Some trigger warnings include suicide, depression, murder, bullying, racism, and sex/sexual references. Despite how challenging it is to approach these topics the author does it in a relatable way. You get to know the main character, Claudette, extremely well. She undoubtedly has the mind of a teenage girl, but little hints of wisdom and life advice are present as well. Claudette is full of personality, a little erratic, honest, and cares for others. Her life has challenging. Claudette's mother died when she was young, her stepsisters are her biggest bullies, and now she has to move towns half way through the school year. From the first chapter Claudette is salty about her situation and heartbroken to leave her three friends. Lots of typical teenage drama happens at her old school and at her new one. However things are different at the new school. Everyone acts like turning seventeen is the most important thing in the world..... why? Claudette finally finds out a few days before her seventeenth birthday that magic is real and she comes from a long line of witches. I love the intricate and mysterious world this author has woven. Despite how neat the magical elements are, what is even more exciting is the boy drama. Claudette is told someone will betray her. She is stuck between trusting her boyfriend and male friend who tell two very different stories. Even without warnings of betrayal Claudette would have a hard time figuring out which boy she wants to be with. They both "appear" to be amazing. This book ends with lots of mystery and unanswered questions which I'm sure will be shared in part 2!

Overall, I thought this was an intriguing quick read. I really appreciated the emphasis on mental health themes in the story. The murder mystery was well done. I’m not personally the biggest fan of a cliffhanger ending, however it did leave me wanting to find out what’s to come for Claudette in the next story. Seventeen:Magic is Real would be most appropriate for readers 15 and older in my opinion due to the dark themes represented. Thank you K.C McMillian and HazelsBookTours for the opportunity and the copy of the book to read.
I couldn’t be more proud. This is the second book I read from this author and I would say, it gets even better and sexier. Insert “detta”. 😅 “Seventeen” covers almost everything. From family issues to self discovery, magic, love interest and even murder mysteries. One that can be perceived as a thought-provoking piece of literary art. The author’s fruit of hard work and dedication.
I LOVE: ▫️Claudette’s character development. The way she gained confidence in herself and stand up against her evil stepsisters. The scene really got me cheering her on! I love it! ▫️Kevin and Eli, you two made it hard for me to choose. Both have interesting and powerful character. They’ve definitely added significant layers to the story. Not to mention their hot and captivating looks and body. ▫️Friendship dynamics between MC and her two bestfriends, Nicolette and Spencer. ▫️Former Math teacher, Mr. Edwards and his slim-fit dress pants. Lol! ▫️The combination of ancient and modern architectural design of Mashal High. It felt real. ▫️Interesting East and West wings. ▫️I love the mention of two familiar names: Caron and Billie; there’s so much to unravel here I guess. ▫️The idea of going through therapy sessions is such an inspiring and empowering approach. ▫️Ofcourse the twist and the cliffhanger ending! Gosh! I need to breath!
I WISH: ▫️Can’t wait for the next installment but please don’t break my heart. I need to know i’m on the right team.
TW: bullying, racism, attempted suicide, murder, loss of a parent
This is the second book I've read by this author, and she's grown a lot as a writer since writing her first book. Her first novel, Bright, was an enjoyable story about a star-crossed love between a vampire and a werewolf. Seventeen is entirely different, being about a teen witch who, at 17, discovers she has a choice to make. In true 17-year-old style, Claudette got on my nerves many times. 😂 But that's only because the author does a fantastic job of portraying Claudette in a realistic light.
The story is written in the first person, told from Claudette's POV. Therefore, the reader gets to know her well and understands the many issues she struggles with, mainly her mother's death and the evil woman her father married. We meet Claudette when she and her family are about to move to a new town she's never heard of before. Forced to leave the only home she's ever known, Claudette tries to adapt to her new environment. Her new school is weird, but easing her transition are the sexy Kevin and Eli. Torn between these two gorgeous males, Claudette must also make a life-changing decision when she turns seventeen, which she does, shortly after she arrives in her new hometown. I won't say more for fear of giving away too much of the story.
If you enjoy fantasy, YA novels, and books about witches, read this book! Did I mention that the case is a beautiful mix of different ethnicities, with most of the characters being black????? I LOVE that! Happy reading!
When you already have a lot to deal with in your life and now have to surprisingly leave your loving house and friends and travel to a whole new city with your not-so-beloved stepmom and crazy sisters, and now that you are about to turn 17, you have discovered that this new life is full of mystery, magic, and darkness. What will you do?
This is the first time I've liked a first-person narrative from beginning to conclusion. Many times, I feel there's a lot of TMI when it's told in the first person, but Kia, my friend here, narrated it so wonderfully that I felt like the protagonist was sitting right in front of me, telling me her entire narrative.
I had a lot in common with Claudette, or I could say everything (apart from the magic, my god, I desperately want some kind of magical drama in my life). But the way she climbed above it all and stood up for herself is inspiring.
Having everything in one book, such as the witch game, murder mystery, and love triangle, is a huge risk to take, yet it works so beautifully in this novel. I mean, how often do you become confused about which side to take in a love triangle? Isn't this a rare scene? It happened to me here, where I couldn't decide between Kevin and Eli.
And cliffhangers make you uneasy; at least, they do for me right now because my curiosity is so high. So I really hope the second half comes out soon (and that I'll be back on the ARC team, hehe!!).
I absolutely loved this book! It definitely kept me on my toes and much like the main character, Claudette I had so many questions. As Claudette moves to a new town and goes to a new high school, there is a sense of mystery and whispers that all will be revealed after her Seventeenth birthday. The readers along with Claudette are taken into the world of magic and witches, murder and betrayal. Who is good? Who is evil? Who can she trust? I have no idea and neither does Claudette!
The ending is a cliffhanger and worked well as an elusive text message between Claudette’s boyfriend Kevin and her friends who might not even be her actual friends!
I love the two main love interest for Claudette — Kevin and Eli. At first I liked Kevin and thought he was sweet but I don’t know anymore. I’m more team Eli because of their undeniable connection. Something about Kevin is suspicious by the time I’m finished reading. Also the spice is 🔥
Kia also touches on sensitive and relevant topics like bullying, suicide, and colourism. I love that the predominant characters in the book are Black and it was also written by a Black author! Representation and diversity is so important and these stories need to be told.

I have just finished "Seventeen, Magic is real part I" by K.C McMillian eading it on my tablet thanks to the Kindle unlimited subscription of my girlfriend.
Claudette, a sixteen-year-old girl, lost her mother at a young age. Now she finds herself living with a stepmother who dislikes her, along with two twin stepsisters who treat her poorly. To make matters worse, she is forced to move to a new town and start over at a strange school, leaving behind her few friends. Little does she know that this new school holds secrets that will only be revealed when she turns seventeen.
In this Young Adult urban fantasy story written by the talented K.C. McMillian, you'll find yourself devouring the words and pages. This book serves as an introduction to a captivating story, where the world-building is deep and each chapter introduces new elements to the plot and the world itself. K.C.'s writing style is direct and to the point, making the reading experience fast-paced and entertaining.
Just a word of warning, once you start reading, the story will grip you and leave you craving for more! I'm eagerly counting down the days until the release of the second part!
This YA Dark fantasy follows the life of sixteen-year-old Claudette, who lost her mother at a young age. She suffers from depression because of it and has been forced to move to a mysterious town and away from her home and friends she's known her entire life. But all things are not what they seem, especially when she turns seventeen.
The story addresses hard topics such as depression, suicidal thoughts, and colorism. K.C. touches on each topic in a relatable and sensitive way.
The Magical World K.C. has created keeps you interested and wanting more. The writing style is straight and to the point and easy to follow. I felt as if Claudette was sitting beside me, telling me her story.
This fast-paced fantasy filled story is something you don't want to miss. I really enjoyed all aspects of this book, and I loved how it started off in the real world and then ended up in the fantasy town Mashalville.
This is the perfect read for YA or even adults like myself.
I really enjoyed reading Seventeen. It was well written and very entertaining. It took me two days to read this book. I needed to know what would happen next and if I didn't have work I probably would have finished it in a day!
The themes in this book was relatable and believable for a fantasy story that takes place in a make believe town. There were moments I thought Mashalville was real. I laughed at the moment where the characters were trying to Google the town though. That was very comical, and other parts in the story as well.
I loved that the author included hard topics within the storyline, because these are topics that must be discussed as teens so great job on that. With that being said, the book has some trigger warnings that people should look over.
Overall, I loved this story and I look forward to reading more from this author. KC is definitely an auto-buy from me.

😊What i liked -
✔ Fated Lovers/Fantasy/Murder Mystery ✔ Claudette's character was a true teen but at the same time very complex. ✔ Even though I did not warm up to the twins though I liked the mystery surrounding them. ✔ Loved the fantasy created and the hype created around the age seventeen. ✔ This book had a perfect balance of secrets, family issues, mystery and a hint of conspiracy.
🤔What could have been better -
✔ That endinggggg had me screaming because I was left with a cliffhanger.
Seventeen is a great story with Cinderella vibes set in a town full of witches and a school that has drama and magic galore. Important themes and issues are weaved into the storyline and gives everyone reading the novella a reminder that no one knows what anyone is truly going through and it is important to treat everyone with kindness and respect. Make sure to check trigger warnings before reading. The characters are lovable and I still can’t decide who I think it the bad guy. As soon as I think I know, another tidbit is dropped that has me guessing again. I can’t wait to continue the story in the next novella!
I really enjoyed this first book in the Magic is Real series! The story is told in the first person from Claudette's POV. Claudette's back story is somewhat tragic. Her mother died when she was just a little girl, and now she's stuck with a stepmother and two stepsisters whom she truly dislikes. It's the last straw when the family must move to a new town away from everything Claudette knows. But nothing in Claudette's life is as it appears on the surface. This is a truly intriguing story, and I'm really looking forward to the next book!
Thank you to @hazels_booktours and the author, @kcminspired_author, for the chance to read this #eARC in exchange for my #honestreview.
✨MY REVIEW✨ This YA fantasy read had the perfect formulation: equal parts self-discovery, a witchy secret town, romance, and magic. This was an entertaining and fast-paced Cinderella meets magic tale that I recommend for those who enjoy fantasy YA books.
I really enjoyed this book! It was fun and magical. The world building and storyline was great. I can’t wait to read more in this series! The ending of the book really made you wonder what is going to happen next. Such a great YA book!
Claudette was funny and such a strong character. I will admit that it did have a slow beginning but the story picked up towards the middle. Overall, I really had a great time reading this book! Highly recommend checking this book out!
