She couldn't let on she knew he was lying

Rose was found washed ashore on a French Polynesian Island in the South Pacific. And although she didn't have amnesia, that was the story she presented to Giles Gengron and his daughter, Josie. It was either that or risk arrest.

"I need to know who I am and what's going on." Rose fretted convincingly. "You do know, don't you?"

She could hardly argue when Giles slipped a gold band on her finger and delivered his own bold-faced lie. "Oh, yes, I know all about you." He assured her. "You're my wife. And you're Josie's mother."

Looking through a box of books that a friend of mine had given me years ago, I discovered some really "vintage" Harlequins and Daughter of the Sea by Emma Goldrick was one of those.

So, this book was first published in 1985........wow, over 30 years ago!! Okay, the plot is somewhat OTT...........can't see the same things happening the same way in 2016!!! However, this did not stop me from enjoying this wacky story.

The heroine is her con artist father's assistant, who gets separated from her father and lost at sea on a small island, Moorea, in the French Polynesia Islands after their last heist.

Rescued and taken to the home of and American writer and his small daughter, she becomes involved in a case of amnesia....and is told by the hero, that she's his wife. Charades. Both hero/heroine hiding their secrets from each other....and the hero's rather manipulative young daughter trying to get them together!!!!

What follows is the most hilarious adventure, filled with some zany local characters, local folklore,

some unbelievable behaviour by a lot of the characters and more.

The settings are absolutely fab

............who wouldn't want to be stranded in a place like this...
 photo imagereader_zpsp7bxzzsi.jpg
The scene at the end with the statue of Pele, the Goddess of Fire that the heroine is carrying on the plane is totally off the wall photo c1ccacab-300f-429c-bce5-2f0fed1c03ae_zpsj0ybekfa.jpg............the connection to Mt St Helens had me chuckling for a very long time.

If you find this book lying around - give it a try. It's actually a very funny and enjoyable read.

"Daughter of the Sea" is the story of Rose and Giles.

In this tale of deception and love, we have a couple who lies to escape the law. The book begins when the h washes up ashore on a French Polynesian Island in the South Pacific, and finds herself stranded amongst the natives. On the run from police, she pretends amnesia, only to come across Giles Gengron and his daughter, Josie, who claim to be her husband and daughter. Giles and Josie too are trying to escape from a vindictive ex, and decide to use Rose as a means to the end.

As Rose adjusts to the native Polynesian customs and being a mother, she falls in love with the island and her child, and is equally fascinated by the man pretending to be her spouse. As passion ignites, reality and lies are exposed. What will happen when their bubble is shattered?

I found parts of this book very fascinating. The h having to adjust to the clothes, the lack of modesty, the food and having a close relationship with her not-so-young daughter was interesting to read. I really loved their mother-daughter bond, and that was definitely the highlight of the book. Also, the strange old men who spoke in philosophical sayings totally gave this book a mystic feel.

If nudity makes you uncomfortable, avoid this book. But if you like an unconventional romance, give this a go.

Re Daughter of the Sea - this one is another Emma Goldrick with the sorta zany plot but for some reason it comes off as strangely uninspired.

The h is a 20 yr old daughter of a small time con artist traveling the world. They wind up in French Polynesia and during a scam, they managed to strand themselves on a yacht in a typhoon. The h's dad puts her in a life raft, as the yacht looks like it is going to crash on an atoll and the h spends two days adrift and then winds up on the H's island.

She knows the police are looking for her, so she pretends to have amnesia. The H takes advantage of what he thinks is her memory loss by telling the h she is his wife and his 10 year old daughter - that he removed from her mother's custody- is their 6 year old child. The h knows this isn't true but she feels she has no choice but to continue on with the amnesia lie.

The H is 35 and a writer, his ex-wife's boyfriend was abusing his daughter, so he kidnapped her and ran away to the South Pacific. The local authorities are doing the American Consulate a favor and checking to see if he is indeed the wanted man in the US and the H figures he can pass the h off as his wife and the little girl's mum and be left in peace.

The h and the little girl look a lot alike and there is a lot of plot moppet manipulation as well as tons about the Polynesian French Pacific. The police inspector shows up and he believes or at least pretends to believe their story. He also mentions how is he is looking for the h but doesn't let on that he knows it is the h who he is looking for. It is all very laisses faire, as long as the little girl is being looked after and happy, the authorities really don't care.

There is a sub-plot where the h is to take a statue of Pele' (the volcano goddess,) back to America when she leaves the island. While the inspector is inspectoring, the h and H wind up sharing a bed and the inevitable occurs. The h doesn't enjoy it at all and accuses the H of rape. Then the fact that the h is lying too comes out and both of them blackmail each other. The H tells the h she can leave in three months, after he manages to buy his ex wife off.

The little girl wants the h to stay forever and when both the ex wife and the h's father arrive at the same time, the little girl runs away. The h is pregnant, doesn't know what to do, but feels bad that she sorta neglected the little girl when her father showed up and wasn't wanted by the police.

The father is now the bank manager of the bank he robbed, someone else stole more money than he did from the same bank and set fire to it too. He is now the President of the bank and about to marry a wealthy widow.

The h doesn't leave with her father, she goes to look for the little girl and the H follows them up to the dormant volcano where they both confess mutual love out of the blue. The little girl is happy, the H and h are happy and the ex wife is bought off. They travel back to the US, taking Pele' with them, and as they are landing in Seattle, Mt. St Helens is erupting.

This one was just sorta huh - there was some banter but all the sub-plots and lies were just tedious after a while, and the little girl was so obviously a plot manipulator that it did not really work well. The in love part came out of the blue because there really wasn't that much tension between the two, even the accusations of rape were just sorta dull and it wasn't exactly rape either.

Not one to really get excited about, unless you have a fancy for French Polynesia and dried coconut.

I read this a while ago and didn't rate it (what's new?) I give 4 stars now to be safe, I know I liked it, I found the dynamic of his lie and her lie and both knowing that the other is lying and knowing the other knows they're lying to be hilarious. I guess I could have given it a 3 star rating to be safer, cause I don't remember if it was really a 4 star read, but I just remember really liking it so, 4 it is. I think I remember there was a lot to laugh about, and a wonderfully convoluted plot.
